Severe Weather Protocol Reactivated
With below zero wind chills expected tonight, Governor Dannel P. Malloy Malloy is reactivating the state’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol through tomorrow morning.
The protocol activates a network of procedures to ensure that the most vulnerable receive shelter from cold temperatures. Under the protocol, relevant state agencies will deploy teams that specialize in working with homeless people to locate those at risk and encourage them to take shelter.
Anyone in the state who knows of someone in need of shelter from the cold should call 211 for the latest list of locations around Connecticut.
Newtown does not have any weather advisories in place for tonight, but residents will certainly contend with cold weather.
The National Weather Service is predicting a mostly clear evening, with a low around 5 degrees. Northwest winds measuring 6-14 mph will create wind chill values between 0-5 degrees.
Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 23 degrees. Wind chill values will be between 0 and 10 degrees, thanks to light and variable winds of about 5 mph in the afternoons. Saturday night will remain cold, but warmer than the day was, with temperatures actually rising to about 26 degrees by 5 am Sunday. Wind chills will again make it feel colder, however, with a south wind of 6 mph making it feel more than 10-15 degrees.
Governor Malloy had activated the Severe Cold Weather Protocol last week, in anticipation of temperatures dropping to the teens and single digits for the first time this year.
