Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*The Senior Center will be closed on Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King day.

*BINGO will be January 21 at 1 pm.

*BEGINNER BALLROOM DANCING CLASS will be offered during the day. Call the center if you are interested. Classes would start soon if there is interest.

*Appointments can be made to review and/or sign up for PART D DRUG PLANS on Mondays between 10 am and noon. Call for an appointment, 270-4310.

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE, for lower and medium income, Mondays only from 9 am to noon, February 9–April 6. Bring last year’s tax return and any other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 to set up an appointment.

*Work on the QUILTS OF VALOR project every Friday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Bring your lunch. Donations of cotton material are welcomed. Thirteen quilts have been sent out to date.

A DAY AT THE RACES, live harness racing at Monticello, N.Y., on Wednesday, February 11. Depart at 8 am, hot and cold luncheon buffet, clubhouse admission and 1,800 video gaming machines.

*ACE IN THE HOLE presents the show, “Carnival in Venice” an Italian-style Mardi Gras, at The Brownstone in Paterson, N.J., on Tuesday, February 24, featuring Italian American tenor DaVido and also Italian-style street performers, and the I Ragazzi Band will provide daylong listening and dancing pleasure. Cost is $86; depart center at 8:30 am.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

January 19–23

Monday: Closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

Tuesday: Beef stew served over egg noodles, tossed salad with cucumber and French dressing, whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Eggplant rollatini, spaghetti with marinara sauce, broccoli, parmesan cheese, Italian bread, coffee cake.

Thursday: Roast turkey with gravy, mashed potato, peas and carrots, cranberry sauce, corn bread, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: January 26: Spinach quiche, stewed tomato, California blend, whole wheat bread, pears.

Tuesday: January 27: Lentil soup with crackers, baked stuffed salmon with dill sauce, oven roasted potato, fresh zucchini, rye bread, mandarin oranges.
