Sandy Hook DUI

Motorist Jane Duffy, 54, of 3 Tanglewood Lane was driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV eastward on Berkshire Road (Route 34) about 7:30 pm January 7, when she attempted to make a right turn onto southbound Tanglewood Lane, but the vehicle crossed the road’s centerline and went of Tanglewood Lane’s northbound road shoulder, coming to rest in a ditch, police report.

Police said Duffy told them that she swerved in order to avoid a snowplow. Duffy was not injured.

After investigating, police charged Duffy with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn. Police released Duffy on $100 bail for a January 21 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Tree Falls

Police report that motorist Catharine Ryan, 39, of Seymour was driving a 2007 Volvo XC-70 station wagon westward on Berkshire Road, west of its intersection with Thunder Ridge Road, at about 9 am January 7, when a tree was starting falling across the roadway.

Ryan then veered into the eastbound lane in seeking to avoid a collision with the tree, police said. The auto ran over the tree and through its limbs as the tree hit the road, police said. Ryan was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

BMW Vs Deer

Motorist Lisa Grubisa, 23, of 184 Huntingtown Road was driving a 2008 BMW 328-XI northward near 113 South Main Street about 10:30 am January 4, when a deer ran onto the street and collided with the auto, police said. Grubisa was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Wasserman Way

A two-car accident occurred about 5 pm January 6 on Wasserman Way, in the westbound left-turn lane for the Exit 11 on-ramp of Interstate 84, police said.

In that collision, motorist Dorothy Tillery, 57, of New Haven, who was driving a 1992 Honda sedan, drove into the rear end of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz sedan driven by Brenda Westphal, 44, of Roxbury, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Tillery a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Chevrolet Vs Jeep

About 10 pm January 6, motorist Edward J. McCauley III, 31 of Stratford, who was driving a 1993 Chevrolet westward on Wasserman Way, near the Exit 11 interchange of Interstate 84, stopped and pulled over to the right road shoulder, according to police.

McCauley then attempted to make a U-turn on the road, but collided with a westbound 2005 Jeep driven by James Kirch, 25, of Huntingtown Road, police said.

There were on injuries. Police said they gave McCauley a misdemeanor summons on charges of making a restricted turn and failure to have automotive insurance.

Icy Roadway

Motorist Silvia Colombara, 61, of 17 Joan Drive was driving a 2002 Honda Passport northward on Joan Drive about 8:30 am January 5, when the vehicle slid on the ice-covered road and struck a residential mailbox, police said.

Colombara was not injured. Police verbally warned her for traveling too fast for conditions.

Car Vs Pole

About 3:15 pm January 8, motorist Arthur Scott, 84, of 23 Shepard Hill Road was driving a 2004 Honda Accord sedan northward on Key Rock Road when he lost control of the auto due to slippery road conditions, police said.

The Honda crossed into the southbound lane and struck a utility pole along the southbound road shoulder, police said. Scott was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

 

Drug Charges

Police said they stopped motorist Andrew Bolmer, 21, of 31 Swamp Road for driving unsafely about 7:20 pm January 10 in the parking lot at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Police said that on investigating, they had their German shepherd smell Bolmer’s vehicle for the presence of drugs, after which the dog located illegal substances.

Police charged Bolmer with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and with unsafe vehicular movement.

After he posted $200 bail, police released Bolmer for a January 27 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Meadow Brook Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred during snowy conditions near the intersection of Huntingtown Road and Meadow Brook Road about 3:51 pm January 10.

Motorist Paul Howard, 56, of 19 Botsford Hill Road was driving a 1989 Chevrolet G-10 van northward on Huntingtown Road, as motorist Kimberly Nezvesky, 18, of 193 Brushy Hill Road was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer SUV westward on Meadow Brook Road, police said.

The van then made a right turn to enter eastbound Meadow Brook Road, but it began to slide and entered that road’s westbound lane, police said. The SUV then moved in seeking to avoid a collision, but the front end of the van hit the front end of the SUV, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported Nezvesky to Danbury Hospital for treatment, police said. Police issued Howard a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Boggs Hill Mishap

About 6:45 pm January 6, motorist William Holman, 46, of 5 Abbotts Hill Road was driving a 2000 Nissan Maxima sedan with two child passengers southward near 130 Boggs Hill Road, when while taking a curve in the road, the vehicle went out of control and entered the northbound lane, police said.

The auto struck a rock along the northbound road shoulder and then came to rest against a utility pole, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Holman for making a restricted turn.

SUV Vs Pickup

Motorist Dong Kim, 43, of Southbury was driving a 2006 Volkswagen Touareg SUV southward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Huntingtown Road, about 9:55 am January 11, as motorist Patrick O’Connor, 50, of 11 Avalon Way was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck northward on South Main Street, police report.

As the Volkswagen attempted to negotiate a curve in the road, it went out of control and entered the northbound lane, resulting in the front ends of both vehicles colliding, police said.

The Ford then went onto the northbound road shoulder, struck an embankment and rolled onto its driver’s side, police said.

Both drivers were treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said. Kim received a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Snowy Road

About 3 pm January 10 during snowy conditions, motorist David Bray, 17, of 2 Rolling Meadows Lane, was driving a 2001 Dodge northward near 49 Walnut Tree Hill Road and attempted to negotiate a curve on the snowy road, but lost control of the vehicle, entered the opposite lane and then struck a fence, police said.

Bray was not injured. Police issued Bray an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Currituck Collision

During snowy conditions about 2:35 pm January 10, motorist Ashley Tomchik, 23, of Monroe, who was driving a 2005 Subaru Legacy sedan southward on Currituck Road, attempted to stop, but slid on the snowy road and struck the rear end of a 2007 Mercedes-Benz sedan driven by George Cunningham, 67, of Monroe, which was stopped for a stop sign on Currituck Road at its intersection with Main Street, according to police.

There were no injuries. Tomchik received a written warning for following too closely.

Flying Ice

Motorist Michael Barton, 41, of Danbury was driving a 2000 Dodge truck westward on Mt Pleasant Road, near Tory Lane, about 12:55 pm January 7, when a piece of ice flew off the roof of an unknown eastbound vehicle, which was possibly a minivan, police said.

The flying piece of ice hit the windshield of the Dodge, damaging it. Barton was not injured. The unknown vehicle kept traveling onward, police said.

Police ask anyone who knows the identity of the unknown vehicle’s driver to contact Officer Matthew Hayes at the police station at 426-5841.

Honda Vs Jaguar

Motorist Marjorie Check, 80, of 12 Crestwood Drive was driving a 2005 Honda Civic coupe westward near 172 Mt Pleasant Road about 10:30 am January 7, when the exterior right rear-view mirror of the Honda collided with the exterior left rear-view mirror a stationary 2004 Jaguar X-type sedan driven by Catherine Golankiewicz, 64, of 72 Old Hawleyville Road, which was parked on the westbound road shoulder, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Check a written warning for making a restricted turn. Police gave Golankiewicz a written warning for improper parking.

Ice On Road

Police report that at about 2:52 pm January 9, motorist David Kopyscinski, 17, of 5 Lori Lynne Circle, who was driving a 2008 Toyota Yaris westward near 172 Brushy Hill Road, while negotiating a curve in the road lost control of the vehicle on an icy patch, went off the right side of the street and struck a utility pole. Kopyscinski was not injured. Police verbally warned him for traveling too fast for conditions.

Berkshire Road

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Pole Bridge Road, about 2:50 pm January 10.

Motorist Victor Mikheev, 22, of Milford, who was driving a 1999 Nissan Sentra sedan, was attempting to turn onto Berkshire Road from a commercial driveway, as motorist Andrew Friedman, 19, of 35-A Bradley Lane, who was driving a 2002 Buick LeSabre sedan, was traveling westward on Berkshire Road, police report.

The two autos collided. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Mikheev for making a restricted turn.

Railroad Parts

Police report they spotted motorist John Evanko, 49, of Danbury parked at the Housatonic Railroad’s railroad tracks near Hawleyville Road at about 6 pm January 12, after which they investigated why Evanko was there.

Police said they found that Evanko was stealing some metal baseplates, which are used as part of a railroad track assembly.

Police thus charged Evanko with third-degree larceny. That charge, which is a felony, reflects the theft of items worth between $1,000 and $5,000.

Police additionally charged Evanko with trespassing on railroad property, driving with a suspended license, and with driving an unregistered vehicle.

Evanko was held on $5,000 bail for a January 13 court arraignment on the charges.

Shoplifting Charge

At about 1:20 pm January 12, police received a report of alleged shoplifting at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

Police said Diana Gil, 33, of Danbury allegedly concealed an item in her purse while in the store and attempted to leave the premises without paying for it. Store security staff detained Gil until police arrived.

Police said the item in question was a container of medicine worth $12.63.

Police charged Gil with sixth-degree larceny, after which they released her on a written promise to appear in court on January 22.

Criminal Mischief

Sometime between noon and 7:30 pm on January 8, someone smashed the left-rear passenger window on a vehicle that was parked at Ricky’s Shopping Center at 71 South Main Street, according to police.

Police are investigating the case of third-degree criminal mischief and ask anyone with information on the matter to contact Officer Steven Borges at 426-5841.

Pontiac Rollover

About 9:30 pm on January 7, motorist Rachel Sack, 17, of Bethel was driving a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire coupe, with three teenage passengers from Bethel, southward on Hattertown Road, near its intersection with Merlin’s Lane, when Sack maneuvered to avoid a branch that was lying on the road, police said.

In making the maneuver, Sack lost control of the vehicle on the slippery road and then went off the northbound side of the street, traveled down an embankment, struck a fence, hit a rock and then overturned, with the Pontiac coming to rest on its roof in the front yard of 83 Hattertown Road, police said.

There were no injuries. Dodgingtown firefighters and ambulance volunteers responded to the call. Police issued Sack a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Warrant Follow-Up

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Nemecio Guerrero, 29, of Bethel went to the police station on the morning of January 13, and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, driving with an overcrowded front seat, and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Police said the original motor vehicle charges stem from a September 22, 2008, incident on Wasserman Way, near the Exit 11 interchange of Interstate 84, during which Guerrero was driving a van that was overcrowded with front seat passengers.

Police held Guerrero on $500 bail for a January 13 court arraignment.

Fuel Tank Punctured

Police said motorist Patrick Gonzalez, 52, of 26 Mile Hill Road South, told them that at about 6 pm January 7, while he was driving a 2005 Kia Sedona minivan southward on Chestnut Hill Road, he struck a log on the road that caused his fuel tank to puncture. Police said they could not find the log in question.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Eye Drops Stolen

About 4 pm January 12, police received a call from store security staff at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street informing them that a youth had stolen some merchandise at the store.

Police went to the store to investigate and then charged the youth with sixth-degree larceny for allegedly shoplifting a container of eye drops.

Police released the youth on a written promise to appear January 30 at Danbury Youthful Offender Court. State law conceals the identities of “youthful offenders,” who are people 16 or 17 years old who are charged with crimes.

Multiple Violations

Police report that they stopped motorist Orlando Aviles, 32, of Norwalk for a tail lamp violation at about 5:20 pm January 12 on Taunton Lane.

During the course of their investigation, Aviles could not show proof of his automotive insurance, nor did he have vehicle registration documents on hand, police said.

Police charged Aviles with a tail lamp violation, driving with a suspended license, failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card, and failure to carry vehicle registration documents.

Aviles was released on $400 bail for a January 27 court appearance.

Warrant Arrest

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Anthony Whitlock, 21, of Southbury went to the police station on the morning of January 13 and was charged with evading responsibility, falsely reporting an incident, and traveling too fast for conditions, police said.

Police said Whitlock’s arrest stems from a September 6, 2008, incident in which Whitlock was driving a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse that collided with a utility pole near 120 Walnut Tree Hill Road, after which Whitlock left the scene of the accident without notifying police about what had happened. Police found the auto at the scene of the crash.

After processing, police released Whitlock on a written promise to appear January 23 in Danbury Superior Court.

Four Charges

Police said they were doing traffic speed enforcement about 9:15 am January 13 on Taunton Lane, when they stopped motorist Christina Feola, 23, of 6 Glenmor Drive for exceeding the speed limit.

After investigating, police charged Feola with traveling unreasonably fast, driving with a suspended license, failure to return a suspended license to the state, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After processing, police released Feola on a written promise to appear in court on January 27.

Burglary/Larceny

Police report that sometime on January 8, someone illegally entered an unspecified home on Clearview Drive and stole items from the premises. Clearview Drive is a loop road that intersects with Toddy Hill Road at two locations.

Police are investigating the incident as a case of third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny. Police ask anyone with information on the matter to contact Officer Michael McGowan at the police station at 426-5841.

Saturn Vue

Motorist Cindy Manning, 49, of 4 Sweet Meadow Road was driving a 2006 Saturn Vue SUV westward near 100 Wasserman Way about 5:10 pm January 13, when a deer entered the street and collided with the vehicle, police said. Manning was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Birch Hill Road

About 8:35 am January 12, motorist Edward H. White III, 17, of Pleasant Hill Road was driving a 1995 Honda sedan northward on Birch Hill Road, when while entering a curve in the road, he lost control of the vehicle, slid off the right side of the road and then struck a embankment and a stone wall, police said.

White was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
