Jr Colonials Skate To Another Pee Wee A Win

The Western CT Jr Colonials PeeWee A team continued its winning ways with a 5-1 triumph against the Greater New Haven Warriors on January 10 at the Danbury Ice Arena. With an astounding 47-11 shots on goal advantage for the Jr Colonials, only the outstanding play of the opposing goaltender kept the score from being even more lopsided. The first Jr Colonials goal was a result of old-fashioned hard work deep in the Warriors’ zone, with forward Liam Smith jamming the puck into the crease from behind the net and forwards Steven Almeida and Matt Hooker both getting off shots before Hooker finally swatted in the loose puck. Newtown defenseman Owen Sandercox then executed what is becoming a signature move for him this season, a beautiful end-to-end rush which he finished off with a wrist shot from between the face-off circles to make the score 2-0 after one period of play. The Jr Colonials found themselves on the wrong end of three concurrent penalties at the end of the first period and the Warriors took advantage early in period two with a goal on a rebound to cut the Jr Colonials’ lead to 2-1. But, Newtown forward Justin Corsello answered for the Jr Colonials when he gathered a pass from Hooker and elevated the puck high into the net for a 3-1 lead. In period three, the Jr Colonials pulled away when Sandercox snuck in from his defensive point position and wristed home a shot following a nice pass by Smith. Frank Haklits closed out the scoring with a shot from in close, assisted by Hooker and Newtown forward Dan Harrison. This was the Jr Colonials’ fifth straight Connecticut Hockey Conference victory and it moved them into a three-way tie for second place with the ECHO Stars and the Hamden Dragons. In a close race, the three teams have identical 14-4-1 records and they sit only one point behind Simsbury and the Wonderland Wizards, who are tied atop the standings. The  Jr Colonials will face West Haven on Saturday at the Danbury Ice Arena. Then, in a game with important playoff implications, the Jr Colonials face the Hamden Dragons on Sunday at the Blake Rink in New Haven.
