Hawks Set Records, Qualify For States

Two members of Newtown High School’s boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams either matched or broke school records and several others qualified for state championship competition at the South-West Conference Developmental Meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown on January 10.

Kevin Bonacci tied the school indoor high jump record of 5-8. The previous record was set by Rich Frankonis on December 30, 1988. Lauren Sudbey set a new indoor pole vault school record (9-6). Sudbey held the previous record of 9-feet which she set on January 19, 2008 and then tied two more times last winter.

The following are state qualifiers:

Boys’ 300 meters: Matt Genovese, 40.24

Boys’ high jump: Kevin Bonacci 5-8

Boys’ shot put: John Wlasuk, 42-3

Boys’ pole vault: Josh Milas, 10

Girls’ 55 meter hurdles: Lauren Pettinelli 9.6

Girls’ long jump: Lauren Sudbey, 15-1

Girls’ pole vault: Lauren Sudbey 9-6; Emily Korth, 9

Girls’ shot put: Rachel Taback 32-8.5
