Itâs Coming!

NYSâs Annual Dinner Dance/Auction â Saturday, March 13, at 7 pm. Get a table together for this fun-filled event. New band! Tickets are $40 per person. Call for further details.

Attention High School Students:

NYS is looking for volunteers to help with after-school programs at the elementary schools; call for further information.

Volunteers Needed:

NYS is moving in early 2004 and is seeking assistance. Anyone who can lend a hand in any way would certainly be appreciated. This is also a great opportunity for community service! Please call NYS if you would like to spend some time helping us.

Moms Groups

Moms of Babies birth to 12 months: Tuesdays 10:30 to 11:30 am

Moms of Toddlers 12 to 18 months: Thursdays 10:30 to 11:30 am

Moms of Multiples/Ongoing: Meets bimonthly, the next meeting will be Wednesday, January 21, from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Working Moms/Ongoing: Meets the second Saturday of the month at 10 am.

Sing-Along With Eric Bagger â Saturday, January 24, from 10 to 11 am.

Parent Programs

Parent Connection is an organization formed by concerned parents and other informed citizens of Newtown to address the problem of substance use and abuse in our community.

Parent Connectionâs next forum, âIâm a Good Parentâ¦Not my Child!â will be facilitated by Wendy Davenson Wednesday, January 21, at 7 pm, in the Newtown Middle School auditorium.

Hope Support Group: If you are a parent with questions or concerns about your childâs possible or confirmed involvement with substances, you are invited to attend the Hope and Support group. This group meets Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the Parentsâ Corner. All are welcome.

Youth Programs

Children Of Divorce Support Group: Meets the first and third Monday of the month. The next meeting is January 26 (due to the holiday on January 19) from 6 to 7:15 pm.

Sib-Shops Support Group: For siblings of children who have disabilities will meet the second Monday of the month. The next meeting will be Monday, February 9, from 5 to 7 pm.

4H: Grades 5 and 6, Tuesdays, 3 to 4:30 at Newtown Youth Services.

HYSAB: The next meeting will be announced.

MSYAB: The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 14, from 2:15 to 3:15pm.

NYCAAP: (Newtown Youth Creating AIDS Awareness for Peers) Please call for meeting schedule.

Middle School Counseling Department Hosts Annual Career Day

Nobody is suggesting shutting the doors on new neighbors. What neighboring towns are doing, and what we should be doing too, is to tap the brakes on all of the multi-family residential development proposals so that we can spend 6 months updating our regulations such that if you want to build dense residential housing here, XX percent of it needs to be affordable (we will never make any headway on increasing our percentage of affordable housing otherwise, short of 8-30g), and the rest needs to be done in as low an impact manner as possible. Low impact on traffic, health & safety, the environment and on the cost of town services.

Ned, please familarize yourself with 8-30G, and then please share the unique flaws that may be helpful in formulating a denial An 8-30g project can be denied only on very narrow grounds – i.e., if it presents health, safety or other concerns that exceed a town’s need for affordable housing. According to the TOG website, “projects cannot be rejected for incompatibility with a Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD); density; traffic congestion; height; aesthetics; concerns of neighbors or the community; and failure to comply with local zoning regulations.” 8-30g proposals are rarely denied by planning and zoning officials because the burden of proof on appeal is on the town. Appeals are costly, but a municipality can be successful in a court case if it has sufficiently established that the concerns leading to denial are factual and substantive.

P&Z Should Reject Vessel Proposal

The town should certainly measure its performance against the statewide strategies. Unless I missed it I only know of one small cluster of homes that would meet the affordable housing program. Given the 500 or so new units being added in the last 10 years I think that 4/500 would not meet the metric to allow for a moratorium. I mean, fingers crossed for a Christmas miracle but I suspect we will see a few 8-30's sent our way in a method to avoid the Nimby mob. Thanks, Nimby mob.
