State Police Issue Winter Driving Tips
With the sudden onset of extremely cold weather throughout New England, the Connecticut State Police have several recommendations for safe driving.
When going out, plan the travel route based on the changing weather conditions. Is the trip really necessary?
Consolidate errands. Plan the trip to limit the number of times it is necessary to stop, park, and be exposed to the extreme cold.
Dress for the weather. Hat and gloves and proper footwear are vital to keep the body warm in extreme cold, especially if there is a mechanical problem with your vehicle.
Make sure the vehicle is ready for winter driving. Warm it up outside the garage and lock it if it is unattended. Be sure to have a spare key to reenter the vehicle. Be sure the defroster works properly, the wipers work, the lights work, and there is plenty of wiper fluid. Keep the gas tank as full as possible.
Be sure to remove snow and ice from the vehicle before driving.
Prepare for a possible emergency. Before setting out, charge your cell phone, pack a snack and water. Be sure the vehicle is equipped with flares, jumper cables, a blanket, and a flashlight.
In an emergency situation, pull the vehicle as far to the right as possible to avoid being hit, the State Police said. Turn on the emergency flashers and remain in the vehicle. Call 911 to report the problem. Stay with the vehicle; it offers more protection from the cold than being outside.
