Sara Kelley scored 15 points – eight of those in the fourth quarter – as the Newtown Hawks sixth-grade girls travel basketball team rallied from a 16-3 deficit to defeat Fairfield in overtime. Here are all the results:

 

Boys 8th

 

New Canaan Red 60, Newtown 47 – Newtown had a difficult time with New Canaan’s fast break and came up short against a good opponent. Dylan Clarke played a strong overall game. Greg Larnerd played well defensively. Mike Maher and Jason Smith played well.

New Canaan Black 54, Newtown 51 – Newtown erased an 11-point halftime deficit with a tremendous defensive effort in the second half. Kevin Troy and Bob Lapple were tremendous on both ends of the floor combining for 30 points. Dan Smith played a strong overall game.

Newtown 52, Danbury Broadview 49 – Newtown showed tremendous heart in handing Danbury their first defeat in league play. Greg Rodden was outstanding on both ends of the floor, scoring 20 points. Bob Lapple scored 10 points and combined with Rodden to hit five three pointers. Dylan Clark was strong in the middle. Jay and Dan Smith did a great job running the offense.

Boys 7th

Danbury PAL 49, Newtown 46 – After being on top most of the game, Newtown lost the lead late in the third quarter and could not recover. Rick Gallucci and John Grimaldi combined for 21 points to lead Newtown while Kurt Nacewicz, Dan Quinn, and Connor Collier combined to chip in 19 points. David Bray rounded out the scoring.

Watertown 37, Newtown 32 – The locals held their own against a very talented 7th/8th grade combined team. John Grimaldi and Connor Collier combined for 20 points to lead Newtown’s scoring, with Cole Depuy, Keith McGrath, Dan Quinn, Kurt Nacewicz, and Ian Cooper playing well.

Newtown 68, Wilton 46 – Connor Collier, John Grimaldi, Ian Cooper, and Kurt Nacewicz reached double figures in scoring as Newtown put together its best offensive output of the year. Ricky Gallucci, David Bray, Dan Quinn, Keith McGrath, and Cole Depuy combined for 25 points.

Ridgefield 44, Newtown 34 – Newtown got down early, but fought back most of the game to close within two at the end of the third quarter – but the inability to handle the pressure defense ultimately doomed the locals. Dan Quinn, Ian Cooper, and David Bray combined for 18 points as Keith McGrath, John Grimaldi, Kurt Nacewicz, Ricky Gallucci, Connor Collier, and Cole Depuy rounded out the scoring.

Girls 7th

Norwalk 50, Newtown 24 – Nora Lynn Shimko scored seven points while Kasey Schulz, Mary Bloshuk and Kelsey Hopper popped in four points apiece as Newtown was overpowered by Norwalk. Rachele Cox played tough defense in the middle and was helped down low by Jordyn Good and Hopper.  Shimko also grabbed nine rebounds.

Greenwich 43, Newtown 34 – Although Greenwich struggled with Newtown’s aggressive defense and full-court press, they outscored Newtown in the final quarter for the win. Nora Lynn Shimko canned 13 points to lead the locals. Jenna Legros added seven points and Kasey Schulz and Lindsay Laub chipped in for a combined 10 points.  Elissa Robertson and Adelle Cerreta played tough defense with Robertson contributing five rebounds and Cerreta making four steals.

Boys 6th

 

Newtown 29, Wilton 25 – George Zaruba, Kyle Kromberg and Ryan Schmidt powered the offense as Newtown scored 20 first-half points. Jeff DiNicola was strong on defense and Casey Tenney was solid off the boards.

Newtown 43, Fairfield 31 – A balanced attack and man-to-man pressure lifted Newtown to another win. Andy Lapple, Dan Lynch, Ralph Sergiovanni and George Zaruba powered the offense while Peter Young dished off several assists and Kyle Kromberg was strong under the boards.

Girls 6th

Newtown 33, Stamford 21 – Kate Bowen and Sara Kelley each scored 10 points to lead Newtown to its fourth win of the year. Kaitlin Marsden chipped in with six points. Kristen Tanner, Ally Modzelewski and Nicole Elias each scored for Newtown and Jennifer Dailey was strong off the boards with eight rebounds.

Newtown 31, Fairfield 27 (OT) – Trailing 16-3 at the half, Newtown rallied and edged Fairfield in an overtime thriller. Sara Kelley had a great game with 15 points, eight of those in the fourth quarter. Kate Bowen played well at the point and chipped in seven points. Susan Mason and Jennifer Dailey controlled the boards for Newtown as they each ripped down 11 rebounds and combined for nine points. Nicole Elias was also tough off the boards as she grabbed seven rebounds while Stephanie Suhoza and Carolyn Fagan sparked the defense.

Girls 5th

St, Mary’s of Ridgefield 26, Newtown 13 – Andrea Nazer, Meghan Loose and Lauren Meyer scored four points apiece to lead Newtown. KellyAnne Brophy, Alex Grant and Maggie Donohue were solid on defense.

Brookfield 29, Newtown 20 – The locals got as close as one point in the fourth quarter before falling to a strong 5th/6th grade combined team. Andrea Nazer canned eight points while Lauren Meyer, Ali Pliszka, Alex Grant, Maggie Donahue and KellyAnne Brophy combined for the remaining 12 points. Mara Scallon made several key steals on defense.

Yorktown 19, Newtown 11 – The locals held a slim one-point lead at the half, but fell to a physical Yorktown (NY) team. Ali Pliszka popped in five points as Cady Jackman, Meghan Loose and KellyAnne Brophy had two points each. Alex Grant, Mara Scallon, Caroline Lawrence and Lauren Meyer played great defense.

 

Junior Boys

 

Wildcats 58, Kings 30 – Jake DeVellis canned 21 points and Tim Larsen added 11 to lead the Wildcats to the win. Chris Basso and David Hutchison played well on the defensive end. For the Kings, Alex Grier and Rob O’Donnell popped in eight points apiece and David Manville grabbed seven rebounds. Tyler Rudolph dished off four assists.

Yellow Submarines 30, Sonics 21 – Jacob Burg scored 13 points to lift the Subs past the Sonics. Joel Minalgo, Jonathan Zigman and Dan Berlinger played well. For the Sonics, Tyler Edwards scored eight points and Chris Page grabbed seven rebounds. Kevin Connor had two steals to spark the D.

Rockets 33, 76ers 32 (OT) – Ryan Goodridge canned 10 points and Conor McManus added six as the Rockets nipped the Sixers in overtime. Peter Wlasuk grabbed eight rebounds while Mickey Fay and Sean Ryan played well on defense. For the Sixers, Tom Jackman popped in 14 points as Joey Scarpelli, AJ Ritchie and Kyle Wagner had solid performances.

Bullets 36, Jazz 36 – Conor Martin scored 10 points and Kenton Lord dragged down 10 rebounds to lead the Bullets. Steve Oberstadt had eight assists and Nathan Middeleer had six steals. For the Jazz, Andy Meisel scored 17 points while Jake Wolf and Alex Bowen played well.

Huskies 39, Kings 24 – Jared Modzelewski scored 14 points and Ryan Hudock had six points and six assists to lift he Huskies to the win. Zach Conger added four points, two steals and eight rebounds. Mike Poeltl added four points and five boards. For the Kings, Adam Schankman and Rob O’Donnell combined for 12 points while Brett Mauro grabbed nine rebounds. Tyler Rudolph had a solid game.

Yellow Submarines 47, Knicks 29 – Jacob Burg poured in 22 points as the Subs shot past the Knicks. Steve Osmolik, Jamey Goodwick and Robert Brautigam all played well. For the Knicks, Alex Magoulas scored 14 points while Ian Doerr and John Aminti scored six apiece. Matt Hill played well.

Nitro 51, Spurs 43 – Zack Varga canned 21 points and Matt Brede had seven points and six rebounds as the Nitro earned the win. Kyle DiNicola and Eric Rardin combined for 10 points. For the Spurs, Kurtis Liska popped in 16 points and Tucker LaPak added eight.

Lakers 53, Timberwolves 30 – Matt Mascolo scored 21 points and Chris Marks added 14 to lead the Lakers past the T-Wolves. Nick Saviano grabbed 10 rebounds while JR Shine dished off seven assists and Ethan Johnson made four steals. For the T-Wolves, Dan Giorno poured in 30 points while Kyle Kearny and Mike Gabor had solid performances.

Wildcats 40, Sonics 36 – Jake DeVellis popped in 14 points and Ryan Golankiewicz added 11 points to lift the ‘Cats to the win. Ryan Drummond dished off seven assists and Brett LeBlanc dragged down eight rebounds. For the Sonics, Harrison Gillis and Tyler Edwards combined for nine points while Kevin McManus had six boards.

Junior Girls

Nightmare 28, Huskies 24 – Caroline Kraich and Betsy Vendel scored 10 points a piece to lead the Nightmare over the Huskies. Taylor Ansbro had five steals and Chynna Smith grabbed six rebounds. Bethnay Morin led the Huskies with six points and Jenny Durelli chipped in with four. Kelley Sullivan had a solid game on defense and Nicole Benzinger was strong off the boards.

Lightning 33, Huskies 32 – Meghan Trosan poured in 17 and Katie Power added six as the Lightning squeaked by the Huskies. Meagan Kelly grabbed eight rebounds and Keegan Frobey has a solid floor game. Bethany Morin and Kristen Gucciardo scored 10 each for the Huskies with Veronica Parsloe grabbing eight rebounds.

Pacers 24, Bulldogs 23 – Renata Villarreal hit a free throw with 12 seconds left to lead the Pacers over the Bulldogs. Ashley Braun scored eight and Jacklyn Petrasanta dropped in six to lead the scoring. Marissa Bobkowski ignited the late Pacer run with a strong all around game. Joanna Barry fired in 11 and Kat Stanton scored four to lead the Bulldogs. Cara Colacurio had four assists and Courtney Gleason was outstanding on defense.

Blue Devils 30, Rockets 22 – Lauren Clark scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Megan Hansen had four assists and Marina Virgalla had five steals to lead the Blue Devils over the Rockets. Colleen Thornberg and Emily Webber both scored six points for the Rockets while Ashley Rothaker dropped in four. Erin Nemeth had a great all around game.

Lightning 38, Nightmare 36 – Meghan Trosan scored 20 points and Jen O’Connell grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lightning over the Nightmare. Stephanie Soder and Marnie Thompson were strong on defense. Betsy Vendel led the Nightmare with eight points, Chynna Smith chipped in with six points and eight rebounds, Megan Sajovic canned six points, and Kendra O’Connor scored six and grabbed four rebounds.

Rockets 23, Huskies 19 – Rachel Marlin scored eight points and Belle Hydock had six to lead the Rockets over the Huskies. Emily Webber grabbed eight rebounds, Rachel Fossum had seven, and Diana Curcuruto was terrific on defense. Kristen Gucciardo led the Huskies in scoring with six points, Kelley Sullivan had four assists, and Bethnay Morin and Jenny Durelli had great all around games.

Pacers 38, Blue Devils 20 – Jen Brewer scored seven points and Carly Doherty, Ashley Braun, and Sarah Peck all chipped in with six to lead the Pacers. Natalie Villa grabbed six rebounds. Rachel Taback and Megan Hansen scored six points each to lead the Blue Devils. Claire Ober grabbed six rebounds while Zoe Rabinowitz and Makena Cunningham played excellent on defense.

Bulldogs 31, Blue Devils 27 – Joanna Barry led the Bulldogs with 11 points while Colleen Murphy and Beenish Ansari had strong floor games in the win over the Blue Devils. Nicole Butler had three assists and Laura Newberry grabbed six rebounds. Megan Hansen dropped in seven points to lead the Blue Devils while Rachel Taback grabbed eight rebounds and Haley Keane and Lauren Clark had outstanding all around games.

 

Intermediate Boys

 

Gators 38, Lakers 17 – Nick Nazer and John Fracker combined for 24 points to lift the Gators to the win. Spencer Gregoire dished off three assists while Caleb Benore and Alex Saviano played well. For the Lakers, Shane Wurtz and Michael Shevlin played well.

Screaming Eagles 24, Celtics 20 – Matt Datin popped in eight points and helped lead the Eagles to the win. Robbie Phillips dished off four assists and Zack Dent had four steals. For the Celtics, Evan Kennedy and Dana Hansen combined for 11 points. Rich Andreotta and Doug Brede played well.

Knicks 30, Wildcats 28 – CJ Portolese scored eight points and Ben Kaye grabbed seven rebounds as the Knicks rallied from a 10-point deficit for the win. Brandon Body dished off four assists and Grant Braun played well on D. For the ‘Cats, Matt Baier scored 10 points as Leo Spinelli dished off five assists and Ben Miles had five steals. Andrew Golankiewicz played well.

Bullets 46, Nets 17 – Matt Hamilton scored 10 points and Kevin O’Connell dished off 10 assists to lead the Bullets to the win. Kyle Vignone made six steals and Brendan McNamara was strong off the glass. For the Nets, Joe Fedak popped in nine points and Dan Greenwood made five steals.

Celtics 35, Wildcats 25 – Brad Biscoe scored 14 points and Evan Kennedy added eight more to lift the Celtics past the Wildcats. Sean Devaney played well. For the ‘Cats, Ben Miles canned 14 points while Matt Baier (five steals) and Michael Herring (four rebounds) had solid games.

Nighthawks 37, Huskies 23 – Jamey Tibbetts and Kyle O’Connor scored 12 points apiece to lead the Nighthawks. Austin Jones, Steve Braun and Jake Barrett played well on D. For the Huskies, Tyler Reszoly made three steals.

Sonics 34, Grizzlies 9 – Evan Triandefilidis, Ben Mahony and Tucker Schmidt scored six points apiece to lift the Sonics. Tory Deakin had four blocks. For the Grizzlies, Ryan Powers canned four points.

Intermediate Girls

 

Bulls 26, Suns 20 – Taylor Benson, Sara Benson, Katie McMorran and Pam Rothenberg had great all-around performances to lead the Suns. Marissa Cucco and Lauren Powers had key baskets. For the Bulls, Michelle Davies popped in 10 points while Chelsea Gray dished off six assists and Jessica Fossum made six steals.

Suns 34, Bulls 14 – Katie Pessin scored 18 points and Hannah Basch-Gould added eight to lead the Suns to the win. Tori Picerno and Amanda Swift were active defensively, combining for 11 rebounds. For the Bulls, Mary Plavnicky canned four points while Nicole Escoda, Kaley Krueger and Meaghan Wilson played well.

Huskies 21, Liberty 19 – Brittany Wiberg, Ellen Ritzinger, Sarah Connor and Jillian Jagoe powered the Huskies to the win. Meghan Bridges canned seven points for the Liberty while Morgan Schick dragged down five rebounds. Brady Eggleston, Jillian Thompson and Katharine Scott played well.

Comets 19, Shamrocks 13 – Samantha Lockhart drained 10 points to lift the Comets to the win. Hannah Deflumeri, Aria Brownell and Lila Kohrman-Glaser all played well. For the Shamrocks, Lisa Vendel canned 10 points while Kate Lago played well.

Midget Boys

 

76ers versus Lakers – Kevin Dennis, Ryan Seymour, Rob Baier and Will Schubert powered the Sixers while Matt Shannon, KC Condon, Luke Shearin and Kyle Wilcox led the Lakers.

Orangemen versus Cardinals – Yossi Kohrman-Glaser, Tim McGrath, Tanner Sowa and Matt Sharpe had solid performances for the ‘Men as Jordan Buyers, Cameron McCleary and Jimmy Russo led the Cards.

Vipers versus Rockets – Chris Erikson, Gary Braun, Ryan Palmer and Chase Hutchison had good games for the Vipers as Austin Bonadio, Greg Horne, Tom Bauer and Justin Cherry led the Rockets.

Hurricanes versus Thundercats – Dan Hebert, Michael Senf, Michael Scharfenber and Kyler Harmeling powered the ‘Canes as Rob Uhde, Shaun Mangold, Rob Bauer and Stefan Dullinger anchored the ‘Cats.

Bulldogs versus Raptors – William Miler, Josh Villa and Justin DeVellis played well for the ‘Dogs as Gavin Scallon, Harrison Buzzi, Sam Liu and Dan Gustafson played well for the Raptors.

Wizards versus Blue Devils – Peter Kerns, David Gerics, Sean Watkins and Taylor Steimle played well for the Wizards as Nick Sajovic, Connor Blan, Pat Mullins and Mac Morlock played well for the Blue Devils.

Gators versus Dragons – Sam Ashey, Kevin Morrissey, Kyle Morrissey and Ben Stoller led the Gators as the Dragons were paced by the efforts of Kevin LeBlanc, Brian LeBlanc, Eric Fiore and Tommy Stewart.

Orangemen versus No Name – David Lucia, Marcus Toms, Rob Daigle and Devon DiNicola had strong efforts for the ‘Men as Max Lopez, David Cartisano, Ryan Crowell and Ryan Seymour led the No Names.

Cougars versus Nighthawks – David Tortora, Ritchie Sandler, Neil Davis and Patrick Riccardi played well for the Cougars. For the ‘Hawks, Will Fletcher, Conor Quinn, Mike Reutzel and Mike Lord had solid games.

Midget Girls

 

Cougars versus Mustangs – Hannah Dillon, Kiely Kuyligowski, Kyra Murray and Madelyn Good powered the Cougars while Megan O’Connell, Alyssa Finkenstadt, Mary Kate Blawie and Morgan Cutoto led the Mustangs.

Huskies versus No Names – Meghan Harkins, Sarah Read, Natalie Galante and Emily Nascewicz played well for the Huskies as Mary Hamula, Jessica Gibbons, Claire Maurer and Madigan Chrystie played well for the No Names.

Wolverines versus Knicks – Erica Knapp, Molly Mahony and Tara Dawley had solid games for the Wolverines as Samantha Steimle, Ellyn Gordon, Kristiana Engler and Alexis Black played well for the Knicks.

Dalmations versus Celtics – Meghan Condon, Kelly O’Sullivan, Allison Blume and Stephanie Zamary played well for the Dalmations as Laura Speid and Sara Principi played well for the Celtics.
