BRIDGEPORT â On a sweet three-pointer from the wing, Kelley Haines became the sixth player (and only the second female) in Newtown High School basketball history to climb past the 1,000-point plateau.
The shot came with 6:14 left in the second quarter of the Lady Nighthawksâ South-West Conference matchup with Kolbe Cathedral last Friday at the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport. Heading into the game Haines â who will be heading to the University of New Hampshire next fall â needed just five points to reach 1,000.
She got the first two from the foul line in the first quarter and then added a runner in the lane to get to within one point.
Haines drained the key three-pointer with the âHawks down 21-13. It was a key shot for another reason, too, since the âHawks â after the game was stopped and Haines was presented with the ball â went on an 8-2 run to get right back into the game.
Briefly.
Newtown went on to suffer a 55-48 loss.
Haines finished with 13 points on the night and with the 18 points she scored in a 69-28 win over New Milford on Tuesday night, she is now only 89 points away from breaking Lynn Lattanzioâs all-time scoring record of 1,115.
With another 10 games to go in the regular season and, at minimum, two postseason games (one in the SWC tournament and one in the CIAC Class LL tournament) it appears likely Haines will break that record.
Just sit back and wait.
