Girls’ Basketball Team Defeats Falcons In Tough Road Tilt
Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team overcame a high-scoring host Joel Barlow of Redding squad to earn a hard-fought 56-53 win on January 15.
After limiting opponents to 30-something points in six straight contests, the Hawks saw the Falcons put up more than 30 in the first half alone. Newtown trailed 34-32 at the half and 47-43 going to the fourth quarter. They outscored Barlow 13-6 in the final stanza to win their eighth straight contest and improve to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the South-West Conference. Barlow is 8-4 (2-3).
Nicki DaPra scored 20 points and Cyleigh Wilson dropped in 14 to lead the Nighthawk offense.
Amy Sapenter scored eight, Shea Murphy five, Jackie Matthews four, Rebecca Alicea three, and Carlie Smith two.
Wilson had four of Newtown’s nine 3-pointers. Barlow made 11 shots from behind the 3-point line.
