Wrestlers, Cagers, Swimmers Earn Wins, Skaters And Gymnasts Compete

Newtown High School’s wrestling team continued its winning ways, earning a 76-0 win at Stratford on January 14. The high school hockey team lost 9-3 to the New Fairfield-Immaculate of Danbury squad at Danbury Ice Arena the same night. Newtown High’s girls’ basketball team posted its second third straight victories with a 54-24 victory over Weston on January 12 and a 65-51 win at Brookfield the next night. The boys’ swimming and diving team was victorious in its third straight meet, toppling New Milford 96-74, on January 13. Newtown’s gymnastics team had its second competition of the season, at New Milford on January 13. Here are some of the highlights from these events:

Wrestlers Blank Stratford

106: Tom Leuci pinned Gavin Scofield in 0:27.

113: Jack Wellman pinned Matt Herrera in 0:57.

120: Luca Crudo earned a 10-0 major decision over Will McCallister.

126: Ed Lovely earned a 3-1 decision over Mike LaPia.

132: Matt Gonzalez pinned Tyris Grant in 1:10.

138: James Leuci pinned Jacob Brisbee in 1:57.

145: Alex Stavola pinned Jake Silverman in 1:01.

152: Joe Accousti pinned Jordan Carrion in 2:50.

160: Connor Lemay pinned Dariell Diaz in 2:32.

170: Anthony Falbo pinned Erik Flores in 0:39.

182: Logan Walsh pinned Tristan Frownfelter in 0:58.

195: Andy Hubina pinned Lance Jamison in 3:22.

220: Tom Long earned a 9-1 decision over Anthony Alvarez.

285: Stephen Grasso pinned Kylani Walker in 2:38.

Hockey Team Falls

The Nighthawk skaters got two goals from Sean Ferris, a goal and an assist from Scott McLean, and a pair of assists from Devin Marsh in a 9-3 loss to New Fairfield-Immaculate. This was Newtown’s fourth straight road game, but first of six consecutive scheduled contests at Danbury Ice Arena — home to several area teams, including New Fairfield-Immaculate, the Nighthawks, and Newtown’s scheduled January 28 opponent: Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury. Newtown will host Horace Greeley of New York on Saturday, January 18; faceoff is set for 2 pm. The Hawks will play Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, January 21.

Basketball Team Wins Two

The NHS girls’ cagers won a pair of road contests to improve to 7-2 overall this winter. Against Weston, the Nighthawks began the game on a 24-4 run and never looked back. Mali Klorczyk scored 18 points, and Olyvia Shaw had ten rebounds, five steals, and four blocks.

The Hawks beat Brookfield behind double-double performances by Shaw and Lauren Wilcox; Shaw had 13 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals, and Wilcox had 11 points and ten rebounds. Klorczyk had her second straight 18-point effort, and Kelly Merrick dropped in a dozen points.

Newtown returns home to face Bethel for a 7 pm contest on Friday, January 16 before heading back on the road for two games.

Swimmers Victorious

In their triumph over visiting New Milford, the Nighthawks earned first place in each of the first eight events, and also had second-place outcomes in seven of them, to seal the win. Leading 96-27 after the 500 yard freestyle race, the Nighthawks exhibitioned the final four events.

The meet kicked off with the 200 yard medley relay event, and Newtown earned a one-two finish. The contingent of Tommy Horan, Seth Barrett, Matt Argraves, and Owen Gray won the race in a time of 1:50.23. Newtown’s relay team of Mike Poulter, Akash Ahuja, Matt Kretz, and Matt Hess was second in 2:03.04.

Newtown posted a one-two-three finish in the 200 freestyle event behind the efforts of Andy Braun (2:06.70), Curtis Giles (2:12.47), and Dave Lawrence (2:13.40).

In the 200 individual medley, Peter Fagerholm was first in a time of 2:15.66, and Brandon Qiao was third in 2:31.07. Newtown had a one-two outcome in the 50 freestyle event; Layton Harrell won the race, making his final touch in 24.55, and Gray sprinted to a runner-up placement in 25.02.

The Hawks had another one-two finish in the diving portion of the meet as Kyle Gaynor scored 178.55 points and Andrew Lally had 137 points.

In the 100 butterfly, Argraves led the way in 59.52, and Matt Marini was second in 1:11.02. In the 100 free, Harrell came in first in 51.92, and Horan placed second in 53.98.

Newtown recorded the three fastest times in the 500 free behind Fagerholm (5:22.52), Lawrence (5:54.64), and Caelan Ritter (6:03.66).

Gymnasts Perform

The high school gymnastics team had its second meet of the campaign with a visit to New Milford, which won the competition with 132.55 points; the Nighthawks scored 106.6. Newtown had some strong performances, including Anna Jannott’s balance beam effort in which she scored an 8.5. and Maddie Jannott’s beam performance of 8.3. Additionally, Alana O’Donnell competed on the floor and beam for the first time and did a fantastic job, Coach Keristen Raccio said. The Nighthawks have their next meet on January 23 when they host Staples of Westport at Kinetic Kids in Oxford, beginning at 7 pm.
