WEST HARTFORD — Artwork created by five students at Newtown High School is featured in the 2014 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards show, currently on display at the Silpe Gallery, at the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School, in West Hartford.

The show will be remain on view until January 29. The public can visit the show Monday through Friday from 10 am until 4 pm, and weekends running from noon until 4 pm. The Silpe Gallery is located on the university’s campus, at 200 Bloomfield Avenue in West Hartford.

The show is the largest juried student art exhibition in the state. Following the Connecticut Regional exhibit, Gold Key award winners from each national region will have their art works reviewed by a blue ribbon panel of judges at the national level. The selected national winners’ artworks will then be exhibited, with a national student awards ceremony following. Selected students will receive an invitation to this event.

NHS senior Isabella Saraceni earned a Gold Key award and the American Visions award for her mixed-media piece, “Guidance.” She also earned the Best in Mixed Media honor for her piece.

NHS junior Katherine Jennings earned a Gold Key award and the title of “Best in Ceramics” for her piece, called “Kat.”

NHS junior Hannah Godbout earned a Gold Key award for her ceramic piece called “Angler Fish.” This is the second time Hannah has earned a Gold Key award in the Scholastic Art Award show.

NHS sophomore Abigail Kohler earned a Silver Key award for her ceramic piece called “Fish Cup.”

NHS senior Rebecca Ainley earned an honorable mention for her painting, “In the Eye of the Beholder.”

Each of the pieces are part of the current show at the Silpe Gallery. According to NHS art teacher Carol Pelligra the pieces were juried from over 1,200 entries from throughout the state. Ms Pelligra said each of the students who have work featured in the show are “remarkable kids, and they all worked so hard.”

Katherine said she likes creating artwork because it is a different media than writing, which allows her to express herself.

Isabella said a lot of time and thought went into her piece, and she is proud of what that work has accomplished.

Each of the students said they were proud of their opportunity to have work included in the show.
