Newtown Middle School Basketball Teams Win

The Newtown Middle School eighth grade boys’ basketball team defeated an aggressive Jockey Hollow team 47-31 on January 7. The team was led in scoring by Angel Santos with 10 points along with Tommy Gleason and Connor Gallagher with 6 points each. Newtown shut down Jockey Hollow’s high scoring offense by smothering their leading scorer with outstanding defense from Nathan Kalra, Matt Hoyt, and Angel Santos. Mike Davis, Drew Tarantino, and Logan Puleri dominated the interior of the defense, blocking shots and ripping down rebounds. Nick Caggenello, Matt Lindell, and Wesley Morlock made key contributions  off the bench on defense.

The Middle School eighth grade girls’ basketball team won its fifth game against the Wildcats from Bethel Middle School on January 12 — 46-26. The lady Lions set the tempo of the game right from the start and never looked backed. Cassie Eckstrom had a season high 23 points and Dani Shine added 8 points. Mary Jo Rossi, Megan Meyer, and Jessie Principi also contributed points. Kristi VosWinkle,  Amanda Crowell, Kerry Scallon, Karliegh Rivard, Bethany Dubois, and Taylor Stroley all had solid games by forcing key turnovers, ripping down numerous rebounds, and making critical plays throughout the game.
