Newtown Fifth-Graders Second In YAC Tournament

The Newtown fifth grade Blue travel hoops team took home second place honors this past weekend in the 24th Annual Yorktown Athletic Club Boys’ Basketball To+urnament held at the Brewster Sports Center in NY. The Blue squad won all three of its games in divisional play, with victories over New Castle, Yorktown and Scarsdale, before eventually falling to Seton in the Championship Game on Sunday night.

On Saturday, Newtown cruised to wins over New Castle, 55-34, and Yorktown, 50-39, utilizing its full court pressure defense and powerful inside game. In the New Castle win, Patrick Conte and Bobby Haskins led the way with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Connor Barrett and Mitchell Savoca chipped in with 6 points each. In the second game of divisional play, the Blue squad faced host Yorktown and dominated from the opening tip-off en route to an easy victory. Newtown used a more balanced scoring attack in the win. Conte and Haskins again led the way with 16 and 8 points, while Barrett, Savoca and Jason Hebner contributed 6 points apiece. Scotty Bauer and Lucas O’Brien scored 4 and 3 points, respectively.

In the last game of divisional play on Sunday, Newtown faced the undefeated Scarsdale Phantom for the right to play in the championship game versus Seton. The low-scoring affair wasn’t decided until the last 5 seconds of the game. With Newtown trailing 25-24, Justin Dunn received a pass from Lucas O’Brien off an inbounds play and calmly buried a foul line jump shot with time expiring to give the Blue a thrilling 26-25 win and a spot in the championship game. In the Scarsdale win, Haskins (9), Savoca (6) and Barrett (4) led the scoring while Andrew Lee, Jack Moulder, Dunn, and O’Brien chipped in with 2 points each.

In the championship game, Seton jumped out to an early 12-2 lead, never looked back and prevailed by a final score of 33-23. Savoca, Haskins and O’Brien paced the Blue with 8, 6, and 5 points apiece.

The loss ended Newtown’s seven-game winning streak and brings its overall season record to an impressive 7-3.
