MARK TOBEY PAINTING BACK ON VIEW

AVV 1-9 #725168

OLYMPIA, WASH. (AP) — One of Washington state’s premier works of art, an untitled 8-by-9-foot painting by Mark Tobey, has been reinstalled in a building on the state capitol campus.

The abstract piece was returned to the wall for which it was designed in the Pritchard Building. It had been removed after the Legislature took over the building for office use while the capitol was repaired following the 2001 Nisqually earthquake. For the past four years it has hung in the Tacoma Art Museum.

Tobey created the work in 1959 for what was then the new home of the state library. He died in 1976.
