Occupation: Iâm working in my 16th year in maintenance at Wilton Meadows Health Care Facility. I was in the Navy, worked in Tallinn in Estonia for the State Department, Iâve lived in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and I was a union carpenter and millwright for over 30 years.
Family: My lovely wife is Laura. We have been married 14½ years. I have three stepsons, Andrew, Matthew, and David, and we have two grandchildren, Hayden and Hunter Rae.
Pets: We have a Guiding Eyes for the Blind dog, a yellow Lab. She was a brood dog and now she is ours. Fable is 6 years old.
How long have you lived in Newtown? Weâll have been in Sandy Hook for 14 years this Easter.
What do you like to do in your free time? We just bought an RV in September and started doing some camping. Golf is my passion, and hiking. I walk our dog about four miles a day. Iâve volunteered for AmeriCares at different times, and church projects, and social services. We like being lazy on the beach now and then, and we love to travel. I read books, and I listen to audio books.
Do you have a favorite golf course? In Connecticut, I run a church outing to Fairview Farms in Harwinton each year. I like its location and design, and the people who run it. My favorite thing is to play along the ocean, like at Pebble Beach.
Do you have a favorite book? I read a lot of different things. I like history and autobiographies. Frederick Forsyth is my favorite author, and Mark Frost, who writes on golf.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? Iâve traveled a lot. Iâve been to the Orient and circled the globe twice. We have been to Europe, and I think we loved Italy and Ireland best. Here, our favorite places are the Rhode Island beaches. I love lots of different places, so picking a favorite is difficult.
What is the best thing about Newtown? The friendly atmosphere and caring people. People donât seem to be in too much of a hurry in this crazy world to pay attention to the needs of others.
Do you have a hero? Mother Teresa, and people who work for peace. I met Robert Frasier when I was in Estonia in 1993. He worked on a peace accord with Richard Holbrook for Bosnia, and died in tragic car accident in 1996. I found his work for peace admirable. I find, too, that people in the nursing industry, in embassies, and all those who take care of the helpless, are unsung heroes. There are so many people who are never praised, who are doing good and working for peace.
What makes you happiest? Being surrounded by people whom I love, family and friends. Anytime you can have gatherings, I love that. Family is the most important.
