NHS Junior To Attend Presidentâs Inauguration
Newtown High School junior Kimberly Solheim, daughter of Peter and Janis Solheim of Sandy Hook, will attend the Presidential Classroomâs (PC) Presidential Inaugural Program from January 15 through January 21 in Washington, D.C.
During the weeklong program, Kimberly and her fellow PC Scholars will interact with Washington insiders including congressional leaders, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders, and journalists.
Students will also participate in the 55th Inauguration of the President of the United States, which focuses on the presidency and involves a postelection analysis and mock presidential election.
Additional program highlights include participate in preinaugural events, such as the Inaugural Parade, PC Student Inaugural Ball, and attendance of the Presidential Oath of Office. The students also participate in seven unique and challenging leadership development experiences, focusing on key issues such as business, media, science and technology, law and justice, national security, and international relations.
Former Congressman Jack Buechner, CEO and president of PC, said, âOur students meet and question the people who make and shape our nationâs policies. No other program melds leadership, academics, and current events in such an appealing combination. Our students return home with a new perspective on American politics and the world.â
Kimberly was chosen based on her academic record and leadership skills. She is currently in the top seven percent of her class, secretary of student government, co-editor of the underclassmen section of the NHS yearbook, and is a three-sport varsity athlete in field hockey, wrestling and lacrosse.
