Newtown Youth Basketball
Jordyn Good canned a critical free throw and Kelsey Hopper forced a key turnover to lift the Newtown 8th grade girls travel basketball team to a one-point win over Greenwich last weekend. During In-House action, Andrea Nazer poured in 26 points to lead Da Bears over Da Bulls in the Intermediate Girls division.

Girls 8th
Newtown 36, Greenwich 35 â Jordyn Goodâs clutch free throw in the final minutes and a key forced turnover by Kelsey Hopper in the final 15 seconds of the game lifted the locals to the win. Nora Lynn Shimko led all scoring with 16 points and Good chipped in five. Kasey Schulz created several turnovers and made nine steals as Kaila Harrington anchored the defense, playing well throughout the game.
Darien 32, Newtown 21 â Darien outscored Newtown by 10 in the second quarter and went on to hold the lead. Nora Lynn Shimko and Jen Brewer combined for 14 points. Kaila Harrington also chipped in three points to the effort as Brewer led the team in rebounding with eight. Shimko, Kasey Schulz and Jordyn Good combined for nine steals.
Girls 7th
Newtown 29, Stamford 24 â Kate Bowen and Carolyn Fagan combined for 13 points to lead Newtown to the win. Megan Bridges, Brittany Wiberg and Kailtlin Marsden combined for 23 rebounds to control the boards for Newtown. Ally Modzelewski led a strong defensive effort.
Redding 26, Newtown 16 â Sara Kelley scored seven points to spark the offense, but it wasnât enough for Newtown. Nicole Elias, Jennifer Daily and Stephanie Suhoza were all strong off the boards as they ripped down 17 rebounds.
At the Danbury Tournament â¦
Norwalk 69, Newtown 32 â Newtown could not stop the ferocious offensive attack of the Norwalk squad. Jennifer Daily, Sara Kelley and Kate Bowen combined for 23 points to spark the offense. Meghan Bridges, Brittany Wiberg and Ally Modzelewski combined for 15 rebounds to help control the boards for Newtown.
Newtown 32, Ridgefield 18 â Kaitlin Marsden led all scorers with 11points while Kate Bowen chipped in nine to lead the offensive charge as Newtown beat Ridgefield. Newtownâs tenacious defense was lead by Stephanie Suhoza, Carolyn Fagan and Nicole Elias. Brittany Wiberg, Marsden and Elias combined for 16 rebounds to seal the victory.
Danbury 29, Newtown 22 â Despite a strong defensive stance in the second quarter where they held Danbury scoreless, the locals fell to Danbury. Sara Kelley led Newtown with eight points while Jennifer Daily chipped in six. Daily also ripped down eight rebounds for Newtown while Carolyn Fagan played well defensively in the post.
Boys 6th
Newtown 38, Danbury/Hat City 27 â The Hawks used tenacious defense and all-around hustle to gain a 38-27 win. Big men RJ Roman, Matt Datin and Grant Braun combined for 25 points. Jack Kneisel was a defensive dynamo, wreaking havoc and never allowing the other team to settle in on offense. Sean Maher continued to display his amazing quickness on some spectacular drives to the hoop.
Newtown 45, Brookfield 24 â In their most balanced game of the year, the Hawks beat Brookfield as Robert Frangione broke out for seven points and six assists. It was the guard play of Frangione and Ishan Tatake that was of considerable note: the two playmakers dogged the Brookfield players on the press, forcing turnovers and getting the ball to the open man. Max Nacewicz made five steals and took three coast-to-coast as Newtown pulled away in the second half. Lewis Thompson had two big steals that lead to some nice Frangione baskets.
Bethel 35, Newtown 21 â The perfect weekend was not to be, as the Hawks fell in a rematch with a strong Bethel team that had beaten them by five before the holiday break. Robert Carroll made some uncanny steals in the second half and Josh Engler enforced his offensive will on the game to make some amazing drives to the hoop for Newtown baskets, but the Bethel lead was just too high an obstacle to overcome.
Girls 6th
Newtown 32, Bethel 18 â Colleen Cunningham and Kristin Errico scored 10 points apiece to lead Newtown to the win. Maggie Donahue and Cady Jackman combined for nine points with Donahue making seven steals and Errico grabbing eight rebounds. Sam Whitley had six rebounds and six steals as Casey Kearns and Jen Smith were solid on defense.
Ridgefield 34, Newtown 23 â Kristen Errico scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Maggie Donahue had eight points, seven rebounds and 11 steals ⦠but the locals fell to Ridgefield. Alex Grant chipped in with three points and four steals.
Girls 5th
Newtown 27, Ridgefield 20 â Riley Wurtz, Jessica Jowdy, Christina Caporale and Nora Murphy combined for 21 of Newtownâs 27 points to lead them to the win. Molly Mahony led the defensive charge with seven rebounds.
Newtown 28, Stamford 17 â Alyssa Finkenstadt had 10 points to lead Newtown past undefeated Stamford. Newtown, now 5-2, also received contributions from Riley Wurtz (six points), Jessica Lynch (four), Meghan Condon (two) and Kendall Svanda (two). Abbey Doski had three steals to lead the defense, which held Stamford to two points in the second half.
Boys 5th
Wilton 31, Newtown 21 â Taylor Steimle had seven points and Sean Ross added six in a loss to Wilton. Kevin LeBlanc had a strong offensive game as Trey Trudell and Daniel Gallagher paced the defense.
Newtown 26, Bethel 18 â Austin Bonadio canned eight points to lead Newtown past Bethel. Dominick Fedak and Michael Greenwood played well on offense as Michael Lord and Josh Barrett anchored the defense.

Junior Girls
Recent action â¦
Sixers 34, Bulls 27 â Kate Pessin poured in 12 points while Keegan Frobey added six to lead the Sixers to victory. Alyssa Buda and Kat Donahue al so helped out with fine floor games. For the Bulls, Rachel Fossum had seven points and Megan Sajovic added four more. Ashley Kuligowski dished out four assists and Michelle Davies had four steals.
Knicks 28, Pacers 20 â Meredith LaPerch led the Knicks with 10 points while Kristen Tassinari and Lauren Picerno had fine games to lead the way. The Pacers were led by Stephanie Spath and Lindsay Laub, who tossed in six points apiece. Laub also pulled down 13 rebounds. Natalie Villa had seven rebounds and Ines Hutchison played well for the Pacers.
Celtics 27, Huskies 22 â Cara Colaccurio canned 10 points to lead the Celtics. Sam Lockhart, Rebecca Castegner and Makena Cunningham played well to lead the Celtics to victory. Lisa Vendel scored 10 points for the Huskies, while Zoe Rabinowitz had five steals and Kate Foy had eight rebounds.
Junior Boys
Hawkeyes 32, Heat 29 â Mike Tobin grabbed seven rebounds and tossed in a couple of late free throws to lift the Hawkeyes to the win. Jake Wolff fished off seven assists and Calvin Song made three steals. For the Heat, Hiram Orama had sight points, Jamie Bower grabbed four boards, and Jeff Brown and John Aminti had strong floor games.
Wildcats 53, Lakers 40 â Jake DeVellis poured in 29 points and David Hutchison added 11 more to lift the Wildcats to the win. Tyler Reszoly and Mike Gabor played well on defense. For the Lakers, Nick Tarantino canned 14 points while Andrew Meisel and Tyler Edwards combined for 20 more. Dale Neves and RJ Swift played well.
Bobcats 34, Rockets 28 â Kyle Pickle and Jeff Selezan combined for 15 points and Kevin Walsh grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bobcats to the win. Brian Murphy dished off eight assists and Ryan Lasher made eight steals. For the Rockets, Peter Wlasuk and David Kopyscinski combined for 12 points and Josh Jowdy and Kevin Carney played well.
Eagles 45, Bullets 35 â Robby Phillips and Keith McGrath popped in 14 points apiece to lead the Eagles. Chris Murphy supported the offense as Kyle OâConnor and Ryan Murphy combined for 15 points. For the Bullets, Rob OâDonnell canned 11 points as Evan Kennedy, Zack Bryant and Chris Dennis played well.
Huskies 50, Nighthawks 24 â Zack Brazo scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Huskies rolled. Zack Dolughy popped in 10 points as Joe Cappiello dished off five assists and Adam Buccino made for steals. For the âHawks, Paul Murphy scored 10 points and Robbie Blanc added six more. Alex Miller and Michael Shevlin had strong floor games.
Yellowjackets 55, Knicks 46 â Brian Reszoly poured in 20 points to lift the âJackets to the win. Joe Fedak, Michael Poeltl, Brandan Bennett and Ryan Schmidt all played well. For the Knicks, Michael Whitley-Rodriguez, Ryan Pearlman and Martin Basso had strong performances.
Bobcats 54, Nuggets 43 â Dan Quinn canned 14 points and Ryan Lasher added 10 to lift the Bobcats past the Nuggets. Kevin Walsh grabbed 10 rebounds as Jeff Selezan and Tom Gilbert played well. For the Nuggets, Matt Narel scored 14 points as Eric Hoffman and Tori Deakin played well.
Jaspers 33, Celtics 25 â Joey Scarpaniello and Steven Musco (seven rebounds) played well and led the Jaspers to the win. For the Celtics, Trevor Todd and Ben Mahony combined for 13 points as Ryan Pendergist and Kevin McCarthy had fine floor games.
Intermediate Girls
Suns 37, Liberty 16 â A balanced Sunsâ offense was triggered by excellent passing from Keri Chernoff and Lainey Audet. Caitlin Dowling and Allison Blume contributed with defense and rebounding as Marilyn LaCroce and Kelley OâConnor had outstanding games. For the Liberty, Chelsea Gray and Meagan Loose combined for 14 points and Elizabeth Eiseman played well.
Rim Rockers 25, Shamrocks 22 â Alison Pliszka scored 17 points and Mikaela McGuire grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Rim Rockers to the win. Jade Mather and Sarah Benson also played well. For the Shamrocks, Kelly Anne Brophy canned 12 points as Michelle Margait (four assists), Kyra Murray (four steals) and Amanda Stanton (six rebounds) had fine floor games.
Da Bears 52, Da Bulls 32 â Andrea Nazer poured in 26 points and Emma Fiore added eight more to power Da Bears to the win. Mara Scallon made five steals and Courtney Amaral grabbed eight rebounds. For Da Bulls, Lauren Meyer canned 13 points and Taylor Benson added 10. Jessica Haitz and Ali Monaco both played well.
Nighthawks 32, Huskies 19 â Kelly Gaston and Jill Jagoe combined for 19 points as the âHawks soared to the win. Jess Fossum made four steals and Laurel Speed had a strong floor game. For the Huskies, Alex Black and Alli Korchman combined for 11 points and Aria Brownell dished off four assists.
Midget Boys
Celtics versus Grizzlies â Michael Senf, Cameron McCleary, Nick Klein and Ryan Palmer led the Celtics while Patrick Afriyie, Greg Horne, Shay DeMarche and Jack Lago powered the Grizzlies.
Squarepants versus Nighthawks â Kyle Morrissey and Tomas Nazer led Squarepants as Adam Harrison, Colin Moller, Conor Quinn and Rob Linden played well for the âHawks.
Huskies versus Pistons â Matt Rahtelli, Joe Davis, Eric Fiore and Nick Strokis had fine games for the Huskies while Patrick Rowley, Jack Kearney, David Gerics and Matthew âLouisâ Gerics led the Pistons.
Challengers versus Huskies â Brandon Marks, Tom Bauer, Max Lopex and Harrison Snellback played well for their squad while David Cartisano, Matt Janeo, Evan Swan and Matt Hoyt powered the Huskies.
Red Bombers versus Blue Devils â Nick Gerbo, Eric Pisani, David Makuch and Patrick Haggerty had fine floor games for the Bombers while Sean Elliott, Christian Mather, Jordan Sock and Matt While paced the Devils.
Tigers versus Orange Crush â Jake Feinstein, Nick Madden, Dustin Cherry and Sam Ashey played well for the Tigers as Chris George, Hunter Low, Tommy Cassin and Matt Lindell played well for the Crush.
Newtown Celtics versus Raptors â Alex Lapinski, Alex Romeo, Michael Scharfenberg and Patrick Thornberg powered the Celtics as Troy Larsen, Jonah Muniz, Harrison Buzzi and Tim Eames played well for the Raptors.
Blue Lightning versus Golden Eagles â Wyatt Depuy, Pieter Martino, Matt Rosa and James Masucci had strong performances for the Lightning as Nicholas Cagganello, Garrison Buzzanca, Jonathan Vaughan and Virgil Procacini played well for the Eagles.
