Dismantling Social Security
Dismantling Social Security
To the Editor:
Although President Bush has repeatedly claimed he has no intention of endangering the retirements of millions of Americans, he seems to have serious plans that would put him well on his way to dismantle Social Security.
White House sources have recently revealed an aspect to their plan for privatization; a plan to cut promised benefits to retirees by nearly a third. And these cuts are guaranteed â whether you opt in to the Bush plan or not.
For our children entering the workforce today, that means they face a cut of more than 25 percent in the retirement benefits theyâre counting on; for their children, it guarantees a 46 percent cut.
I canât stand by and let George W. Bush and the Republicans cut our promised guaranteed retirement benefits â especially when so many of us are counting on Social Security to help us lead happy, healthy lives when we retire. For someone like myself, who doesnât have a private pension, and whose IRA is relatively small, it is crucial that I benefit to the greatest extent possible.
Sincerely,
Carol LeKashman
