Celebrating 100 Years

Dorothy Taplin Rogers celebrated her 100th birthday January 11 at the River Glen Health Care Center in Southbury.

Mrs Rogers’ two children, Doug Rogers of Newtown and Lynn Rogers Porter of Cambridge, Mass., two grandchildren, and three of her six great-grandchildren attended a birthday celebration for her in Southbury this week.

Mrs Rogers has been a resident of Fairfield County and of Heritage Village for 70 years.

The centenarian was cited in December for her contributions to The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Va. She had recently donated artifacts she had inherited from her father, Willis Fayette Taplin, who had been the chief accountant at the Continental Ironworks, builder of the ironclad Civil War ship USS Monitor. The artifacts — a banner and a sheet of blank checks from Continental Ironworks — will be displayed in the museum’s new USS Monitor Center.
