Author To Speak On Nonverbal Learning Disabilities
NEW CANAAN â If your child has difficulty making friends or adapting to change, interprets everything literally, seems unusually clumsy, is very bright but appears clueless, has difficulty writing but possess remarkable rote-memory skills, these may be symptoms of a nonverbal learning disability (NLD). Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, a Westport-based nonprofit organization, is hosting a prepublication book presentation and discussion by Marcia Brown Rubinstein on the morning of Wednesday, January 19, in the Adrian Lamb Room at the New Canaan Library, 151 Main Street, from 10 am to noon.
Ms Rubinstein, one of the foremost experts on this complex learning style, is the author of the new book, Raising NLD Superstars: What Families with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities Need to Know About Nurturing Confident, Competent Kids.
She will discuss the major areas affected by NLD, appropriate intervention, and the ways in which families and caregivers can maximize the potential of each of these often-gifted children. Copies, which will hit stores on February 1, will be available for sale at the event.
Ms Rubinstein is a contributing editor to the Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities Newsletter, as well as an educational consultant in private practice. The founder and past president of the NLD Association, board member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, and past chair of its Learning Disabilities Committee, she also sits on the Professional Advisory Boards of the Connecticut Learning Disabilities Association and Franklin Academy, the private school in East Haddam.
In addition to answering questions from the audience, she will be available to sign prepublication copies of her book.
The January 19 program is free and open to the public. For more information on joining Smart Kids (annual membership fee is $25) or to register for the New Canaan Library program, call 203-226-6831 or visit www.SmartKidswithLD.org.
