CONTINENTAL ARMY DRILLS

ewm/lsb set 1-14 #615714

VAILS GATE, N.Y. — In the winter of 1782–83, the soldiers of the northern Continental Army anxiously waited for news of peace to arrive from Europe. On Sunday and Monday, February 20–21 Presidents’ weekend, 1 to 4 pm each day, soldiers will bring to life the Continental Army’s final winter encampment with military drills, musket and cannon firings and other camp activities at New Windsor Cantonment State Historic site.

On Sunday, at 2 pm a military drill with musket firings will be followed by the firing of the site’s two cannons. On Monday, 1 to 4 pm, the military and camp life demonstrations continue. From 2 to 3 pm, children enlist in the army, drill with wooden muskets and get paid in Continental currency for their service. From 3 to 3:45 pm, children participate in a fun and informative search through camp to find objects lost by the soldiers with rewards for all.

The New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Sit is on Route 300. For more information, 845-561-1765.
