Boys' Cagers (Fast) Break Brookfield's Winning Streak And Swimmers Cruise
The host Newtown High School boys’ basketball team used the fast-break—repeated transition baskets, many of which came off steals – to break Brookfield’s season-opening six-game winning streak with a 58-48 victory on January 13. While one stretch of victories came to an end, another continued. With the win, the Nighthawks made it five straight games without a loss and improved to 6-2. This was Newtown’s South-West Conference opener.
Will Dalton led Newtown with 22 points, Jeremy Doski scored ten, Harry Depuy scored eight, Jacob Burden had seven, Charlie Huegi contributed five, and Mason Melillo and Dillon Palumbo each added three. Doski and Huegi had nine and seven assists, respectively. Depuy had six steals, and Huegi came away with five steals. Doski and Depuy each grabbed six rebounds, and Dalton pulled down five.
In the pool, Newtown High’s boys’ swimming and diving squad earned a 96-74 win over visiting New Milford on January 13. The Nighthawks earned first place in each of the first eight events to seal the win. Leading 96-27 after the 500 yard freestyle race, the Nighthawks exhibitioned the final four events.
