Swim Team Wins Two In A Row Raises Funds In Memory Of Greg Chion

By Andy Hutchison

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team topped visiting Bethel on January 6 and host Oxford on January 10. Perhaps more significant than wins and losses is the fact the Nighthawks have been making strides in the pool with the young team members improving on times in recent meets, Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin said after the win over Bethel and as his team geared up to face Oxford.

“Just based on the last week of swim meets — competitions we’ve had — you can definitely see the team growing, getting more mature, knowing how to swim races, being mentally stronger in races,” the coach said.

The Nighthawks had another successful swimming event — despite a loss — this past week. The team fell to visiting Brookfield 96-79 on January 4 but, more importantly, it was the Tenth Annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Fundraiser in Memory of Greg Chion, a former swim captain at NHS who succumbed to leukemia in 2000. Brookfield Coach Brian Reiff, a former Newtown coach who guided Chion in the NHS pool, spoke about his former team leader during the annual ceremony.

NHS defeated Bethel 94-84 two days later. Results are as follows: 200-Yard Medley Relay, 1:57.68, first, Frankie Biancardi, Seth Barrett, Matt Argraves, Pat Milano. 200 Free, first Mike Lally 2:07.32; second Austin Adamcheck 2:10.15. 200 Individual Medley, second Barrett 2:31.22; third Argraves 2:32.70. 50 Free, second Scott Schmidt 27.20; third Pat Haggerty 27.21. The Nighthawks continued to show improvement in a 96-84 win at Oxford on Tuesday. Results are as follows: 200 Medley Relay, first 1:57.33, Sean Fahey, Barrett, Argraves, Milano. 200 Free, second Lally 2:06.55; third, Mais 2:15.50. 200 IM, first Adamcheck 2:25.50; third Barrett 2:31.54. 50 Free, second Schmidt 26.36; third Haggerty 27.63. “Overall, this past week has been great for the team. The team has stepped up in a big way the past couple meets and gotten the job done. Not only have we won two meets in a row, but almost everyone on the team has gotten a personal best in their respective event. Hopefully we continue this trend and keep making progress everyday in the water,” Gauvin said.

The Nighthawks will have a chance to keep getting better at home with their next five meets all scheduled to take place at NHS. Newtown will host meets each of the next three Tuesdays at 4 pm, beginning with a clash with Pomperaug of Southbury on January 17. NHS hosts Joel Barlow of Redding on January 24.
