Prisoner Arrested On Serious Assault Charge At Garner

State police said they received a report about 12:27 am on January 9 concerning an inmate-vs-inmate assault that had occurred at Garner Correctional Institution, the state’s high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road, so they responded to investigate.

State police said that inmate Jose Aviles, 29, had a razor blade and allegedly attacked his cellmate with the blade.

Neither the 19-year-old cellmate, nor Aviles, were injured in the incident, state police said.

Aviles was charged with first-degree assault, possession of a weapon in a correctional institution, and failure to submit to fingerprinting, according to state police.

State police said Aviles was arraigned on the charges later that day in Danbury Superior Court. Aviles, who has not pleaded to the charges, is scheduled to return to court on January 31.

On January 11, Aviles was being held at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers on $1 million bail on the three charges stemming from the incident at Garner.

Aviles is serving a 50-year sentence on a murder conviction.
