Holding Cell

Police report that Michael Castagna, 40, of Trumbull, who was being held on bail in a police station holding cell for a court appearance, damaged some property in the cell at about 5 am on January 3.

Police said they charged Castagna with second-degree criminal mischief and with interfering with police, thus adding $500 to his bail for a scheduled court appearance on that day on various unrelated charges.

 

DUI Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Matthew McHugh, 21, of Rowayton went to the police station on the evening of January 4 and was charged with driving under the influence by a person under age 21, police report.

Police said that the incident that resulted in McHugh’s arrest occurred when he was 20 years old.

Police report that that McHugh was driving a 2008 Volvo XC-70 station wagon on Toddy Hill Road, near Clearview Drive, at about 2:32 am on August 12, when the vehicle went off the road and struck a tree, causing it to uproot and land on some utility lines. The auto came to rest on its roof, police said.

Following the August accident, ambulance volunteers transported McHugh to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, after which police investigated the incident and then obtained the court warrant for his arrest.

Following processing on January 4, police released McHugh on $100 bail for a January 17 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Vehicle Break-In

Police report that sometime between 10:30 am and noon on December 27, someone broke through a driver-side window of a vehicle which was parked in the front lot at Club NewFit at 23 Commerce Road and stole a wallet from inside the vehicle. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Drug Charges

Police report that while on patrol at about 1:23 pm on January 3, they saw a suspicious vehicle parked in the parking lot at Newtown Skate Park at Dickinson Park off Brushy Hill Road, so they investigated.

Police said they charged an occupant of that vehicle, Jonathan Simko, 18, of Bethel, with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana and with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Backpack Theft

Police report that during a track meet between noon and 1 pm on December 27 at Newtown Youth Academy at Fairfield Hills, someone stole a black backpack, including its unspecified contents, from the infield area of an indoor track. The backpack has the words “Ford Iron Man” on it, police said. Police ask anyone with knowledge of the theft to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Hattertown Road

At about 9:30 am on January 1, motorist Wendy Gall, 55, of 165 Boggs Hill Road was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix sedan southward near 231 Hattertown Road, when she stopped for an unknown reason and then started backing up, police said.

The Grand Prix backed into the front end of a 2006 Pontiac Vibe hatchback driven by Anthony Keating, 61, of 7 Oak Ridge Drive, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Gall a misdemeanor summons on charges of driving without automotive insurance, failure to carry a vehicle registration, and unsafe backing.

Mercury Vs Ford

About 12:26 pm on January 4, motorist Mary Lynch, 73, of Brookfield was driving a 2001 Ford Windstar minivan southward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Mile Hill Road, when she stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Ford was struck from behind by southbound motorist Ramon Vidal-Suero, 23, of Danbury, who was driving a 1996 Mercury Marquis sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Vidal-Suero for following too closely.

Speed/License

Police report they were using radar speed measurement equipment on Toddy Hill Road, near Botsford Hill Road, about 7:55 am on January 8, when motorist Lukeiser Brown, 29, of Danbury drove through the area at a speed well above the posted speed limit.

Police said they stopped Brown and investigated, charging Brown with speeding and with driving with a suspended license. Brown was released on $100 bail for a January 19 court appearance.

Honda Vs Saab

Police report that motorist Matthew Hoffman, 18, of 36 Rock Ridge Road, who was driving a 2007 Honda CRV at about 9:11 pm on January 5, was backing out of a driveway on Underhill Road, after which the Honda struck a parked Saab 9-3 sedan on adjacent Alpine Drive.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Hoffman a written warning for unsafe backing.

Reckless/DUI

State police report that they stopped motorist Ryan Kaska, 20, of Monroe for speeding on eastbound Interstate 84, at the Exit 11 off-ramp, at about 1:19 am on January 6.

State police said that after investigating, they charged Kaska with reckless driving and also with driving under the influence by a person under age 21.

State police released Kaska on $500 bail for a January 23 court appearance.

 

Drug Violations

Police said that while on patrol at about 6:46 pm on January 9, they saw two vehicles parked in a dirt parking lot near the end of the dead-end Commerce Road, so they investigated.

Police said they charged two occupants of the vehicles with drug violations.

Police said they issued Alexander Neufeld, 18, of 12 Joan Drive an infraction ticket on a charge of possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, a violation that carries a $170 fine.

Also, police said they issued Daniel Clement, 19, of 2 Covered Bridge Road an infraction ticket on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, a violation that carries a $136 fine.

Intersection Crash

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the four-way intersection of The Boulevard and Schoolhouse Hill Road at about 8:09 pm on January 9.

Police said that motorist Marjorie Shaffer, 49, of 32 Grand Place was driving a 2007 Volvo S-60 sedan southward on The Boulevard, as motorist Barbara Wolf, 52, of 16 Taunton Lake Drive was driving a 2009 Honda CRV SUV westward on Schoolhouse Hill Road.

The two vehicles collided in the intersection, according to police. Occupants of the vehicles were treated at the scene and released, police said. The accident is under investigation, according to police.

Jeep Vs Bridge

At about 11 pm on January 5, motorist Lisa Marie O’Leary, 44, of 30 Russett Road, who was driving a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV westward on Meadowbrook Road, near its intersection with Lazybrook Road, became distracted and the SUV then collided with a bridge structure, police report.

O’Leary reported minor back pain, but declined transport to Danbury Hospital, police said. Police said they verbally warned O’Leary for making a restricted turn.

Toyota Vs Nissan

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Botsford Hill Road and High Bridge Road about 12:30 pm on December 31.

Motorist Daniel Young, 49, of Marlborough was driving a 2010 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck southward on Botsford Hill Road, as motorist John Paradise, 55, of Woodbury was driving a 2009 Nissan Versa northward on Botsford Hill Road, police said.

The Toyota then stopped and attempted to turn left onto High Bridge Road, but the two vehicles collided, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Young an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Two Violations

Police said that at about 12:35 am on January 11, they stopped motorist Leslie Tracey, 25, of New Milford near 100 Wasserman Way to investigate.

Police said they charged Tracey with traveling too fast and with driving under suspension. Tracey was released on $100 bail for a January 25 court appearance.

Shoplifting

Police report that they are investigating a case of shoplifting that occurred at the Walgreens drugstore at 47 South Main Street, on the corner of South Main Street and Mile Hill Road, at about 11:12 am on January 9.

Police said that a white Hispanic male, who has a goatee-style beard and was wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket with leather sleeves, was seen stealing items from the store, after which the male was spotted running toward Mile Hill Road.

The unspecified items stolen are worth approximately $400, police said.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crime or who has knowledge of the incident to contact Officer Scott Smith at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Car Vs Tree

Motorist Katelyn Bolmer, 24, of 38 Berkshire Road was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima sedan eastward near 85 Sugar Street at about 4:10 am on January 12, when the vehicle went off the right side of the road and struck a small tree, police said. Police said Bolmer told them that she may have momentarily fallen sleep before the accident occurred.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Bolmer a written warning for making a restricted turn.
