Newtown High School Lists Available Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-Help, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg or 703-276-0100.

Monsanto Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program — Monsanto will award 100 scholarships for $1,500 to high school seniors who are part of a farming family and will pursue a career in agriculture. Applicants should have an above-average academic record and plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school to study any agriculture-related field. Financial need is not a consideration. Applications are available at www.monsanto.com or the Career Center. The postmark date is February 15.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship — Every branch office of AXA Advisors will award up to ten scholarships of $2,000 to local high school seniors in cooperation with Scholarship America. Applications can be obtained through AXA’s Stamford office. Scholarship winners must demonstrate ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family, and community, and the ability to succeed in college. All information is available at www.axa-achievement.com and must be completed by February 17.

Connecticut Nurserymen’s Foundation — A $5,000 annual scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Connecticut high school senior who is accepted in a two- or four-year course of study beneficial to the horticulture industry. This includes, but is not limited to, ornamental horticulture, landscaping, nursery management, and greenhouse management. An important part of the criteria for selection will be scholastic standing and financial need. The application must be received by March 15.

Latino Scholarship Fund — Scholarships provided by the Latino Scholarship Fund are available to college-bound Latino high school seniors from greater Danbury. Applicants must be of Latino heritage and US citizens. Selections will be based on character and integrity, academic standing and/or potential, involvement in and commitment to community, and financial need. The Career Center has applications. The deadline for completed applications is March 15.

Hord Foundation Scholarship — This scholarship program is for black students graduating from high school from greater Danbury. The award criteria are: acceptance to an undergraduate program or other program of continuing education, academic standing, contributions to school and community, financial need, a personal interview, and overall strength of application. A completed application along with transcripts and two letters of recommendation are due by March 3. Application packets are available in the Career Center.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards — Regional and national scholarships in six different categories are being offered to graduating high school seniors who are of Hispanic heritage. The categories are academic excellence, community service, engineering and mathematics, health care, journalism, and sports. Regional winners receive $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. National winners receive an additional $5,000. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and meet minimum GPA requirements. Applicants are encouraged to apply online at www.HispanicHeritageAwards.org. Paper applications are also available at local Subway restaurants. The Career Center has basic information. All applications are due by February 3.

Junior Achievement Scholarships — There are several scholarship award programs for high school students who have been involved in Junior Achievement. The Career Center has information packets with all scholarship offerings. The Walt Disney, Joe Francomano, and Hugh B. Sweeny applications must be postmarked by February 1 and the Nelnet Scholarship must be postmarked by March 15. Information is also available at www.ja.org/programs/programs_schol_dis.shtml.

Black History Month Academics Contest — The Connecticut National Guard and the US Postal Service are sponsoring a recognition program for African American students who have sustained superior academic performance. The winner in the high school category will be awarded a $100 savings bond and certificate. One winner will also be selected at the elementary and middle school levels. The Career Center has applications, which must be postmarked by January 19.

Sammy Awards 2006 — The Milk Processor Education Program in partnership with USA Today recognizes 25 graduating high school student athletes throughout the nation with scholarship awards of $7,500 for their achievements in academics, athletics, community service, and leadership. Winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Disney World and an opportunity to be pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in an issue of USA Today. Applicants must apply online at www.whymilk.com; application deadline is March 3.

University of Connecticut–100 Years of Women Scholarship Award — This award will honor a current UConn undergraduate, graduate, or high school senior planning to enroll in the University of Connecticut who has demonstrated a commitment to women’s issues through service to their community or school. The award ranges from $500 to $1,000. Applicants must be Connecticut residents and demonstrate financial need and high academic performance. Applicants are available in the Career Center and are due by February 24.

Connecticut PTA Scholarships — Two $1,000 scholarships in memory of Christa McAuliffe, First Teacher in Space, will be awarded to two graduating seniors from CT PTA/PTSA high schools. Students must be planning to attend a four-year college to pursue a career in teaching. Newtown High School can nominate one candidate. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be returned to the Career Center by February 9 to be considered for nomination.

American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship — Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from Connecticut high schools who are planning to major in a family and consumer sciences field in a two- or four-year school of higher education. These fields include, but are not limited to, child development, social work, fashion design, dietetics, and hotel and restaurant management. The student selections will be based upon leadership qualities, character, academics, SAT scores, and participation in family and consumer sciences courses. The deadline is March 15.

Connecticut Women’s Bowling Association — A $500 award will go to a graduating high school senior (male or female) whose mother or grandmother is a sanctioned member of the Connecticut Women’s Bowling Association. Applicants must be planning to continue their education in the summer or fall. The student does not have to be a bowler. The application must include all transcripts of grades, including first quarter grades and be signed by a guidance counselor. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 15.

Newtown Newcomers & Neighbors — A $500 recognition scholarship to a graduating senior from Newtown High School who is a “newcomer” to the community and has made a positive impact on the school and/or community. Applicants must have moved into Newtown and /or NHS during their junior or senior year of high school and have made a positive impact. Applications must be submitted to the Career Center by April 13.
