EASTON â What compels photographs to capture moments of beauty and interest? Local artist Heidi Schmitt Erspamer thinks many photographers are torn between a nostalgic yearning to hold the world still and another urge to celebrate its essential impermanence.
âSometimes I feel that a particular scene captures me instead of the other way around,â says the photographer. âIt arrests my attention and presents itself to me perfectly composed. If I record the scene on film, the resulting photo rarely equals the mystical qualities of the original moment, but I never stop looking forward to comparing what my camera produces to what I remember feeling when I took the picture.â
Ms Erspamer won a blue ribbon in last monthâs juried Easton Arts Council Photography Exhibition. Now a new solo exhibit of her work, titled âLandscapes To Love,â will be on display through February 28 at Easton Public Library, 691 Morehouse Road (at the corner of Center Street).
The exhibit features more than 50 photographs of predominately New England landscapes that range in scope from macro lens studies of woodland plants to wide vistas of Long Island Sound and parts of the Maine coast.
An artistâs reception will be held on Saturday, January 28, from noon to 3 pm, in the community room of Easton Public Library, where Ms Erspamer looks forward to meeting visitors who share her interest in nature and photography.
