Newtown Rotary Gives Dictionaries To St Rose Fourth Graders
A dictionary was given to every fourth grade student in St Rose School by Newtown Rotarians. This completed the clubâs project of presenting a dictionary to every fourth grade student in the Newtown and St Rose schools. By the time students reach the fourth grade, their reading is expanding very rapidly and they are constantly encountering new words and expressions. Rotary believes that a personally inscribed dictionary is a gift that will encourage use and aid education.
Brian Amey, project chairman, stated that more than 450 dictionaries were distributed. Assistance was given by Rotarian Tony Salvatore, assistant principal of Reed School and the Rotary-sponsored INTERACT (for INTERnational ACTion) Service Club of Reed School. The INTERACT Club attached a label inside each of the book covers, explaining the Dictionary Project of Newtown Rotary and listing the name of the person receiving the reference book. Mary Mahoney, principal of St Rose School, lauded Rotary for its interest in helping and motivating the students with their many projects.
Newtown Rotary is dedicated to sponsoring programs for students of the Newtown school system. There are Rotary sponsored INTERACT Service clubs at the Reed, middle, and high schools. The Reed School club, as an example, has sponsored a number of very successful blood drives. Its next blood drive is scheduled for March 31.
Every month, students from the three schools and St Rose, are recognized for their achievements in studies, dedication, and community service and are presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award.
Newtown Rotary, together with more than 32,000 other Rotary Clubs in 170 countries, are determined to leave the world in better condition then when they entered it. If you have reached that point in life where you feel you would like to help others less fortunate then yourself, you are invited to attend one of the supper meetings held every Monday evening at 6:15 at The Inn at Newtown on Route 25 just south of the flagpole.
