Gleanings Quotation

Misattributed

To the Editor:

One of my favorite quotes, “Our greatest fear...” appearing in the January 5 “Gleanings,” was erroneously attributed to Nelson Mandela.

The passage was actually written by Marianne Williamson in her book, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles, published in 1992.  This paragraph, which began circulating on the Internet several years ago, was mistakenly attributed to Mandela’s 1994 inaugural address. Wikipedia quotes Williamson, “As honored as I would be had President Mandela quoted my words, indeed he did not. I have no idea where that story came from, but I am gratified that the paragraph has come to mean so much to so many people.”
