Programs For Parents

Change of Dates for Positive Parenting Programs: “Positive Parenting” (geared for parents of pre-school and elementary students) will now begin on Tuesday, January 25. “Welcome To The Teen Zone” (recommended for middle and high school parents) sessions will meet on Wednesday evenings, beginning January 26. Both courses run for five weeks, from 7 to 8:30 pm, and are held in NYS’s Parents’ Corner. The fee is $25. Also, if you would like to host a 5-week group at your home, a staff member would be happy to arrange this with you. This is a great way for neighbors to get to know one another. To register for these courses please call the office.

Interested in sharing parenting skills with others? NYS is holding a Positive Parenting Training Day on Saturday, January 29, from 9 am to 1 pm. You do not need to have participated in the PP programs in order to attend. This course is free for Newtown residents and $50 for out-of-towners. For further information, please call the office.

Entertainment books are about to become history. There are just 4 books left! If you would like to purchase one, please call the NYS office.

Fathers’ Night

Next evening for Dads will be Monday, February 28, beginning at 7:30 pm.

Youth Services After School

A few openings are still available for “Visit the Big Y” and “How Things Work In Newtown.” These programs begin the week of January 17 and are open to Middle School students. Both have limited enrollment, so if you are interested, don’t wait! Please call the office to register or for more information.

Youth Group Meetings:

The High School Youth Advisory Board (HS YAB) will meet on Monday, January 31, at 6:30 pm.

NYCAAP will continue to meet alternate Monday and Tuesday evenings. The next meeting will be Tuesday, January 18, at 5:30 pm. Underclassmen only, please.

The Middle School Youth Advisory Board (MS YAB) will begin the New Year with a “Breakfast Will Be Served” meeting on Wednesday, January 19, at 8 am in the Middle School teachers’ lunchroom.

All programs will take place at Newtown Youth Services, 41-A Main Street (next to Town Hall), unless noted. For further information on any of the above programs, please call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335.

The nursery rhyme “Ring Around the Rosey” is a rhyme about the plague. People infected with the plague would get red circular sores (“Ring around the Rosey...”). These sores would smell very bad so people would hide flowers on their bodies in an attempt to mask the smell (“pocket full of posies...”).  People who died from the plague would be burned to reduce the spread of the disease (“ashes, ashes, we all fall down”).
