Shoplifting

Police report an incident about 3:15 pm on January 8 involving alleged shoplifting at Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street in Botsford.

Police said that after the incident, on Wasserman Way they stopped the vehicle carrying the people believed to be involved in the incident. After investigating, police charged Megan Kohler, 26, of Danbury with sixth-degree larceny. Police charged Miguel Marrero, 32, of Danbury with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and with possession of a controlled substance. The item that was allegedly stolen from the store was an amount of Red Bull, which is a canned energy drink.

After processing, police released each of the two people for January 22 court appearances.

Acura Vs Acura

At about 8:22 pm on January 5, on eastbound Berkshire Road, about 100 feet west of its intersection with Toddy Hill Road, motorist Eric Moore, 17, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2009 Acura TL sedan, struck the rear end of a 2009 Acura TSX sedan driven by Edwin Gomez, 22, of Newington.

There were no injuries. Moore received an infraction for following too closely, police said.

SUV Vs SUV

Police report an accident involving two SUVs on Dodgingtown Road, about 500 feet west of its intersection with Cemetery Road, at about 6:57 pm on January 4.

Motorist Helena Nietsch, 72, of Newtown, who was driving a 2016 Toyota Highlander SUV, was attempting to exit a residential driveway, as motorist Heather Schacht, 20, of Bethel, was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Trax SUV westward on Dodgingtown Road.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police issued Nietsch an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

12 Criminal Charges

Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for his arrest, Gregory Peters, 37, of Sandy Hook turned himself over to police at the police station on the morning of January 3 and was arrested on 12 criminal charges.

Police arrested Peters on four counts of third-degree larceny, six counts of third-degree forgery, and two counts of fourth-degree larceny. Third-degree larceny is a felony.

Police said the charges stem from past incidents involving stolen checks. Following arrest processing, police released Peters on a written promise to appear in court on January 23.

DUI Incident

Police said they received a call about 8:11 pm on January 3, reporting that a motor vehicle accident had occurred near 28 Farview Drive in Sandy Hook, so they went there to investigate.

Police found that motorist Jeannie Rowan, 58, of Sandy Hook, who had been driving a Saab auto, had struck a retaining wall, after which the vehicle got stuck in loose soil. Police charged Rowan with driving under the influence and with making an improper turn.

Following processing, police released Rowan on $100 bail for a January 17 court appearance to answer the charges.

Broken Glass

Police report that at about 7:31 am on January 2, Michael Horvath, 49, of Shelton, who was driving a 2008 Isuzu NRR glass truck westward on Berkshire Road, just west of its intersection with High Rock Road, while negotiating a curve to the right, failed to maintain his travel lane, and the passenger side of the truck hit a rock outcropping along the right road shoulder.

The impact damaged the truck’s passenger side and also shattered some of its glass panel cargo. Police called in the state Department of Transportation to remove the shattered glass from Berkshire Road. The truck is owned by Whalley Glass Company of Derby. There were no injuries.

Police verbally warned Horvath for failure to maintain the travel lane. The incident caused travel delays.

Pocketbook Stolen

Police report that sometime between 2:15 and 3:30 pm on January 1, someone smashed in the front passenger-side window on a locked white Volvo SUV, which was parked in a parking lot on Keating Farms Avenue, near Trades Lane, at Fairfield Hills, and then stole a pocketbook from within the vehicle.

Police urge that locked, unattended vehicles not have any valuables left within them in plain sight. It is unknown if a group of four white males, estimated to be in their late teens or early 20s, who were seen in that area at that time, were involved in the crime or may be witnesses to it.

Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Officer Maryhelen McCarthy at the police station at 203-426-5841 concerning Case 2019-0027.

Drug Charge

State police report that at about 3:37 pm on January 1, on eastbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, they stopped motorist Tinawatie Goordhin, 25, of Waterbury for speeding, after which they smelled the odor of marijuana in the vehicle that she was driving.

A search of the vehicle’s trunk turned up 2.07 ounces of marijuana. State police charged Goordhin with possession of more than one-half ounce of marijuana. They released her on $1,000 non-surety bail for a January 22 court appearance.

I-84 DUI

State police responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident about 11:46 pm on December 31 on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, after which they found that a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Christian Gomez-Zhicay, 29, of Waterbury had spun out, traveled onto the highway’s median, and struck some guardrailing. There were no injuries.

After investigating, state police charged Gomez-Zhicay with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, and failure to drive in the proper lane. After arrest processing, Gomez-Zhicay posted $500 cash bail and was released from police custody for a January 15 court arraignment.

Key Rock Collision

Police report an accident involving a sedan and a pickup truck on Key Rock Road, near its intersection with North Branch Road, about 9:54 pm on December 30.

Motorist Andrew Dwyer, 40, of Newtown was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima sedan southward on Key Rock Road at high speed, as motorist Jacob Masten, 18, of Hudson, N.Y., was driving a 2002 Ford F-250 pickup truck with two passengers northward.

The Nissan then entered the opposite lane and struck the Ford. The Nissan did not stop traveling and continued moving northward, according to police. Dwyer then lost control of the Nissan and drove off the right road shoulder, where he collided with a stone wall, struck a curbside mailbox, and then hit several trees, after which the Nissan came to rest down a roadside embankment.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Dwyer to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Police arrested Dwyer on charges of reckless driving, traveling too fast for conditions, making an improper turn, and evading responsibility.

Following arrest processing, police released Dwyer from custody on a written promise to appear for arraignment on the four charges before a judge on January 15 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Interstate Crash

About 4:39 pm on December 27, motorist Klever Salinas, 50, of Danbury was driving a 2010 Toyota RAV-4 SUV westward on Interstate 84, about 1,000 feet west of Exit 9, and slowed due to heavy traffic, after which the Toyota was struck from behind by a 2005 Buick LeSabre sedan driven by Pamela Richardson, 73, of Andover, Mass., state police said.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.
