WOODBURY â Woodbury Antiques and Fine Art is presenting an exhibition of New England landscape paintings through February 24. There will be an opening reception at the gallery on January 12, from 12 to 5 pm.
Titled âNew England: We shall be as a City upon a Hill,â the showâs theme stems from Massachusetts Governor John Winthropâs 1630 statement, âWe shall be as a City upon a Hill!â
The exhibition includes such works as Carolyn M. Bellâs âSmith Cove, Gloucester, Mass.,â E.C. Coatesâ âView of Mount Tom and the Connecticut River,â Jesse Talbotâs âVermont Scenery,â J.W. Bellâs âEcho Lake, NH,â Leon Foster Jonesâs âSummertime, NH, 1909,â George Mitchellâs âLow tide, Long Point Lighthouse, Provincetown, MA,â William Chadwickâs âOld Lyme,â Wilson Irvineâs âOld Lyme in Winter,â and Arthur Cohenâs âPilgrims Monument, Provincetown, Mass.â
Also, Albert P. Buttonsâ âA Cape Cod Windmill,â Wilton Lockwoodâs âInterior Scene,â Walter Clarkâs âConnecticut Landscape,â George L. Noyesâs âMount Monadnock, NH,â Horace Brownâs âScene near Springfield, Vermont,â and Hal Robinsonâs âFarmington River, Conn.â
Of particular note is the Leon Foster Jones work, which is a divisionist type of broken brushwork canvas depicting a bridge in New Hampshire with a stream below glittering in the sunlight. In theme and composition, it closely relates to a painting in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston by the same artist, also from 1909, titled, âSuncook River, New Hampshire.â
