NHS Girls' Basketball Team Bounces Back From Loss To Bethel With Easy Victories

Newtown High School's girls' basketball team rebounded from a 51-42 loss to host Bethel, the defending South-West Conference champions, on January 3, with a pair of convincing wins. The Nighthawks defeated host Stratford 59-45 on January 6, in a game rescheduled because of snow two days earlier, then toppled visiting Brookfield 66-29, on January 9.

Against Bethel, Amy Sapenter led Newtown with 14 points, and Nicki DaPra and Cailin Wilson scored nine and eight points, respectively.

Cailin Wilson, DaPra, and Sapenter each hit a pair of 3-pointers.

The Nighthawks were a sharp 16-for-19 from the free throw line but were limited to just ten field goals.

Newtown led 12-10 after one quarter, and trailed 27-23 at the half, and 38-31 heading to the fourth.

In the Stratford game, DaPra and Cyleigh Wilson both scored ten points, Rylee Mulligan scored nine, Carlie Smith dropped in seven, and Cailin Wilson and Sapenter each added six.

Caroline Stubbs scored four, Ali Kelleher had three, and Jackie Matthews, Kira Smith, Shea Murphy, Emma Magazu, and Rebecca Alecia all tacked on two.

DaPra, Cailin Wilson, and Cyleigh Wilson all sank a pair of 3-pointers.

Mulligan had ten assists, and Stubbs pulled down nine rebounds.

The Nighthawks build a 13-5 lead after one quarter of play and led 24-16 at halftime before outscoring Stratford 25-8 in the third quarter on the way to a commanding 49-24 lead through three quarters of play.

The Hawks scored 17 points in each of the first two quarters and led 17-4 after one and 34-12 at halftime in the Brookfield game. They turned a comfortable lead into a blowout, outscoring the Bobcats 27-6 in the third.

DaPra led Newtown with 17 points, Cyleigh Wilson scored 14, Cailin Wilson dropped in seven, Mulligan and Matthews each scored six, and Sapenter added five.

Cyleigh Wilson hit four 3-pointers, and Mulligan and DaPra each sank two from downtown. Mulligan handed out a dozen assists.

NHS, after hosting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Thursday, January 11, at 6 pm, will host Saddle River of New Jersey on Saturday, January 13, at 12:30 pm.
