I sure wish I had a frowny-face BAD Egg Award to hand out, because I know just who would receive it. I hear from a Scudder Road resident that on New Year’s Day, she and her husband spotted three men taking split wood off of their neighbors’ property. “My husband went over and told them it was not available to be taken. They put it back and left.” That’s all good and well; except that the neighborhood watchdogs woke up the next morning to find that their front door had been egged. Coincidence? Whether or not, it is shoddy behavior by a trio of bad eggs.

One bit of good news comes out of the waterlogged C.H. Booth Library. Young Adult Librarian Kim Weber says that the Tardis, a phone booth/time machine from the Dr Who television series, built by Ian Wilson and his dad, Scot, survived the January 4 flood inside the library. Ian and Scot spent months working on it, and had just installed it in the Young Adult section of the library the Saturday before last. “It survived without a drop of water on it,” says Kim jubilantly, “a good thing, because it is made of paper.”

The Bee welcomes a new intern, Newtown High School 2013 graduate and Endicott College freshman Michelle Spanedda. She’s already made fast friends with office dog Tique and seems comfortable here at 5 Church Hill Road. She tells me she likes music, theater, cooking, and writing. (Here’s hoping she also likes feeding the cat with loads of Newtown gossip.) Wednesday marked Michelle’s first full day in the office, and by coincidence, former Bee intern Steve Bonanno stopped by to say hello and learned the person who has taken his spot is also a fellow Endicott College student. Steve’s been up to quite a lot, he tells me. He is writing for DigBoston, and having fun covering concerts and writing movie reviews.

Rehearsals for the Newtown Choral Society spring concert begin Wednesday, January 22, at 7:30 pm, in the chorus room of Newtown Middle School. The theme for the April concert is “Music Of The Night,” and will include songs like Cole Porter’s “Night and Day” and “In The Still Of The Night,” as well as “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” from The Lion King. If you can feel the love of singing, why not join in? The Choral Society welcomes new members. Director Mary Andreotta will assign new singers to sections. Congratulations to Lorraine and Michael Hurley. They welcome grandchild Evelyn Pierce McMurrough, named for both great-grandmothers, and born during the snowstorm, January 3, in NYC, to Micaela McMurrough, the Hurley’s youngest daughter, and Jason McMurrough.

FAITH Food Pantry, located in the lower level of St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook Center, is feeding more people than ever, say volunteers. As always, FAITH appreciates food donations, but right now what they need is more help during the Thursday evening hours, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Ingersoll Auto of Danbury, owned by Todd Ingersoll of Newtown, has committed to another year of free Saturday night movies at Edmond Town Hall. The Ingersolls stepped up early last year to make the special offer of free movie tickets to one Saturday night screening each month. This weekend, the Main Street theater will begin screenings of Delivery Man, and the 7 pm show on Saturday night is free. As ETH Manager Tom Mahoney has said, “All you need to do is come to the box office and tell us how many tickets you want and we will give you that many.”

Hearts of Hope of Newtown will host its first painting party of 2014, Wednesday, January 15, at the hall of Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road. All ages are invited to paint palm-sized clay hearts, which this month will be delivered to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. There is no charge, but donations are accepted and used to cover the costs of the hearts and supplies, all of which are provided. Painters are welcome for all or any portion of that timeframe. Ben’s Bells Newtown will launch a new series of monthly fundraisers on January 17, “Girls Night Out Filled With Kindness.” The events will be the third Friday of each month, from 8 to 11 pm, at the 17 Church Hill Road studio. Women are welcome to attend alone or with friends. Light refreshments will be offered (BYOB) as will “be kind” raffle prizes. Suggested donation is $10 per person. We’ve heard from a few families already that the stork has come. If you live in Newtown, have had a baby since the beginning of the year, and you haven’t already done so, contact The Bee to have your newborn be a contender for Newtown’s 2014 First Baby. Parents have until noon on Tuesday, January 14, to share their happy news. The parents who can offer the earliest day, date, and time for their child’s 2014 arrival will receive a prize package filled with goods and services thanks to many local restaurants, banks and businesses.
