Hawk Skaters Blank Watertown-Pomperaug And Tri-Town
Newtown High School’s hockey team earned a 4-0 win over the host Watertown-Pomperaug of Southbury team at Taft School’s Mays Rink in Watertown on January 4. Goaltender Patrick McLoughlin kicked aside all 21 shots he faced to earn the shutout.
Jonathan Lovorn scored two goals and had an assist, Zach Waller and Matt Sabia both scored, and Hayden Savoia, Cooper McLean, and Dan Harrison all registered assists.
The Nighthawks then blanked visiting Tri-Town 3-0 at Danbury Ice Arena on January 8 to improve to 4-1-1 this season. McLoughlin made 17 saves for his second consecutive shutout. Lovorn scored twice, and Waller added a goal. Newtown dominated possession of the puck and reeled off 50 shots on goal.
Newtown was solid on the breakout from its defensive end and used crisp passes to get through the neutral zone and generate scoring chances. After a scoreless opening stanza, the Hawks scored twice in a span of just two minutes early in the second period to seize control.
Good pressure in the offensive zone helped the Hawks keep the puck deep and led to Lovorn banging home a rebound for a 1-0 lead with 12:36 to play in the period. Savoia assisted the goal. Moments later, Domenic Cartelli got low to block a shot to help preserve the lead.
Waller got a loose puck near the post and jammed a backhander high into the net with 10:36 to play in the period. McLean and Sabia had assists on the play. Lovorn added an unassisted tally in the third.
Newtown, after visiting Shepaug-Litchfield- Nonnewaug on Friday, January 10, will return to Danbury Ice Arena to host New Fairfield-Immaculate of Danbury on January 15 for a 7:50 pm contest.
