Grade 7 Girls Travel
Bethel 30, Newtown 27: Newtown got out to an early lead with Danielle Shine scoring the first of her 8 points on a flawlessly-executed opening tap play. Mary Joe Rossiâs determined play at point guard got Bethelâs guards in foul trouble early and led to a 12-point performance by the Newtown floor general. On the defensive end, key steals by Emily Grimes and Tess Murray combined with multiple blocks by Amanda Crowell and Danielle Shine to slow down the methodical Bethel offense. Untimely turnovers and a late Bethel rally were too much for Newtown to overcome in the end.
Grade 4 Bantam Girls
Bluedevils 32, Blue Lightning 26: Behind a strong defensive effort lead by Carly Kreshpan, the Bluedevils were able to defeat the Blue Lightning. Leading scorer Olyvia Shaw and assist leader Maddie Cole led the offense with help from a strong rebounding effort by Emily Neave. Diana Kirkman and Erin Tressler also played well in the win. Jessica Maturo and Nicole Zaccaro led the way for the Blue Lightning, each scoring 8 points. Bridget Walsh contributed a number of key assists. Nicole Frascatore and Alexis Barra also had strong games for the Lightning.
Wildcats 14, Pirannahs 12: Allison Indelicato scored the game-winning basket with 30 seconds remaining to lead the Wildcats to their first victory of the season. Cassidy Datin and Emily Bell also played well for the Wildcats, scoring 4 points apiece. Julia Bogdanoff contributed 2 points and played excellent defense. Jillian Pieretti led the scoring for the Pirannahs.
Tigers 26, Comets 12: Lucy Helgren, Meghan Doyle and Madeliene Manfredonia had strong offensive games and Emily Dirga, Isabelle Pryor and Haley Conrad cemented the defense in the win. Megan Goyda led the scoring for the Comets while Lauren Cirone, Tegan Doherty and Claire Beiter put in tough defensive efforts.
Midget Girls
Chili Peppers vs Lightning: For the Chili Peppers, Rachel Phillips and Kim Buttery played great offense while Allison Kelleher and Catherine Rizk were strong on defense. For the Lightning, Lauren Adams and Stephanie Helstern led the offense and Cory Mangold and Savannah LaFerriere were strong on defense.
Dynamites vs Junior Mints: For the Dynamites, Sarah Houle and Brianna Castellanos played great offense and Rebecca Gavel and Adelaide Meier led the defensive effort. For the Junior Mints, Jackie Matthews and Olivia Hage were great on offense and Julia Doyle and Lauren Ankers were aggressive on defense.
Purple People Eaters vs Cheese Doodles: For the Purple People Eaters, Lexi Leidlin and Madison Findley paced the offense while Lucy Scarangella and Camryn Findley were aggressive on defense. For the Doodles, Isabelle Fitzgerald and Evelyn Schwertly led the offense and Danielle Powell and Jenna Gonski played tough defense
Yellow Jackets vs Storm: For the Yellow Jackets, Alexis Mason and Alexandra Nuzzo had the hot hands while Brianna Giglio and Emily Krasnickas held the opponents at bay. For the Storm, Katie McCabe and Elizabeth Weisgerber were great on offense and Erin Burns and Shannon Cheh did well at defending their hoop.
Grade 8 Boys Travel
The Newtown Boys 8th Grade Travel team spent a good portion of their holiday break playing basketball by playing seven games in 13 days. The team posted five wins including a march to the finals of the Danbury PAL Tournament. In the PAL tourney, Connor Quinn led the scoring attack and Kevin LeBlanc set up several baskets. Reid Schmidt contributed rebounds and Danny Hebert was astounding with his sharp shooting from the line. Defensively, Sean Elliott shut down the opponents with several steals, while Gavin Scallon swatted away shots. Nick âThe Microwaveâ Gerbo heated up in a hurry to provide instant offense whenever needed. In league play, Newtown defeated a tough Wilton team, 53-51. The physical inside play of Pieter Martino and David Gerics along with the thrashing drives of Mike Daubert were key in the victory. That moved Newtown into sole possession of third place in the tough Fairfield County league. They look to continue their run this Saturday against Westport.
Grade 6 Boys In House
Screaming Eagles 31, Gators 30: The Screaming Eagles used strong fourth-quarter defense and shared scoring to edge the Gators. The Eaglesâ defense was led by Andy DeWolfe, Shane Quimby and Will Dalton who combined for several tough rebounds and steals. Jaret DeVellis led the offense and Chris Hartley scored the eventual game-winner with 45 seconds to go. Dalton also chipped in with eight points. The Gators were led by Bryce Decker who scored 18 points, and pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked 7 shots. Jason Ferrari scored 4, while Robbie McCabe and Mitchell Godin had a good defensive effort.
Semi-Pros 41, Wolves 24: James Burdette and Harry DePuy combined for 29 points and Eric Gibbons chipped in with 6 more to lead the Semi-Pros to the victory. Michael Unschuld and Jimmy Widmann led a strong defensive attack. Michael Cirone led the Wolves offense with 7 points. Zach Weiland and Jack Corbett also helped pace the offense, scoring 6 and 4 points respectively. Kevin Ovendorf pulled down 8 rebounds and Trevor Lopez had 4 steals.Â
Heat 34, Nets 25: Led by Colin Reillyâs 11 points, the Heat defeated the Nets 34-25. Playing tough defense, Will Swain and Matt Bouton split 12 rebounds. Sean McCafferty contributed a solid all-around game. The Nets had a balanced scoring effort led by Bobby Archiereâs 6 points and Nate Dowdâs 6 assists. The defense was powered by David Corsi up top and Andrew King on the boards with 5 rebounds.
Junkyard Dogs 27, Dragons 22: Graham Hubbert and Austin Huffman each dropped in 4 points and controlled the offensive boards for the Dogs. Baxter Hankin scored the decisive basket late in the fourth quarter to give the Dogs a lead they would not relinquish. Joey Carrino provided the dirty work by consistently setting screens for his teammates and playing stifling defense at the point. Robby Schreiber and Sean Kemsley combined for 12 points to spark a third quarter comeback by the Dragons. Rory Phillips and Sawyer Conrad played tough defense while David Csordas and Colton Moroney were warriors on the boards.
Celtics 49, Dunkeys 38: Albert Dean and Jon Sherman combined for 33 points to lead the Celticsâ offense, while Ryan Whitton and Brennan OâSullivan provided great defensive energy and hustle. Connor Miller and Stephen Grasso had 8 points each and Peter Manfredonia added 6 more. Danny Romeo and Mason Galanis rebounded well and played strong defense for the Dunkeys.
Grade 5 Boys
Giants 25, Celtics 19: Nick Rohrbacher scored 7 points to lead the Giants with Adam Weber and Shawn McCarthy adding another 6 points each. Declan Sullivan sparked the defense and Matthew Ingwersen grabbed key rebounds. For the Celtics, Jack Procaccini tossed in 6 points and Jake Oliger scored another 5 points, each getting assistance from James Carney. Lucas LaDestro and Nick Samuelson provided much of the defense, grabbing rebounds and creating turnovers.
Bruins 39, Raptors 31: Andrew Svanda and Gordon Walsh each scored 10 points to lead the Bruins with Dylan Tyrell leading the team in assists. Cole Terry ripped down a number of rebounds and Daniel McCarthy led the team in steals. Colin Patrick lea the Raptorsâ offense with 16 points and got timely assists from Matt Campbell. Thomas Gavel made his presence known on defense with 5 steals and Dillon Palumbo grabbed 6 rebounds.
Nighthawks 24, Wolfpack 23: Max Weber scored 8 points to lead the Nighthawks in this see-saw battle. David Anderson led the team in assists with Tim LeBlanc and Boris Kudlac providing the pressure on defense to keep their team in the lead. Ryan Shaw led the Wolfpack with 12 points thanks to several assists from Devin Peterson. On defense, Daniel Pearson led the team in steals with Marcus Wessel grabbing the majority of rebounds.
Knicks 37, Huskies 31: The Knicks rallied late with Sam Duffy leading the offense with 10 points and Jeri Draper finding the open man much of the game. Nick Genovese was all over the court on defense creating turnovers with John Delrossi grabbing a number of rebounds. James Accousti tossed in 10 points and Mason Melillo added another 8 points to lead the Huskies. Geoff Santore and Matt Meyers led the defense with key steals and rebounds.
Junior Boys
Knicks 50, Heat 48: For the Knicks, Pat Riccardi led the scoring with 26 points along with Ivan Hutchinson who had 16. Robbie Hughes was the defensive star and Daniel Bethke the rebound leader. For the Heat, Justin DeVeliss was the high scorer with 26 points. Colton Spasta had 5 assists, Patrick Carello had 3 steals, John Myers had 7 rebounds and Ryan Rosenberger had 5 rebounds and 4 points.Â
Warriors 48, Nets 46: For the Warriors, Eric Fiore led the scoring with 28 points and Brandon Cooper had 10 points. Colin Post had 4 assists, Brian Arnold had 5 steals and PJ Hickey added 8 points. Eric Pisani, Ryan Pisani and Patrick Pierce were strong on the boards. For the Nets, Nicky Sajovic was the high scorer with 19 points, Brenden Peterson had 6 assists, Richard Greenwood had 5 steals and Justin Adsitt-Wiener had12 rebounds.
Brickplayers 45, Celtics 19: For the Brickplayers, Jonah Muniz was the high scorer with 17 points. Matt Baldino had 5 assists, Charlie Helgren had 10 steals and Tom Bauer added 5 rebounds. For the Celtics, Matt Lindell was the high scorer with 11 points and Andrew Ryan had 6 points. Tom Floros was the defensive star and Danny Cummings was the rebound leader.
Trashtalkers 44, Grizzlies 37: For the Trashtalkers Brandon Marks led the scoring with 16 points. Patrick Afriyie led a well-played defensive game with 5 steals, 6 blocks and 8 rebounds. For the Grizzlies, Tommy Catalina was the high scorer with 8 points. Max Lopes had 4 assists, Garrison Buzzancahad 5 steals and Hunter Low had 8 rebounds.
Bullets 35, Gators 30: For the Bullets, Tyler Gibley was the high scorer with 9 points, Chris Carroll was the assist leader and Chris Devaney was the rebound leader. The Bulletts had all-around good team defense. For the Gators, Stephen Conway led the scoring with 9 points. Jordan Sock had 2 assists, Alec Beauchmin had 2 steals and Austin Hubbert had 6 rebounds.
Wildcats 65, The Team 59: For the Wildcats, Andrew Martinez led the scoring with 20 points and Wyatt Depuy had 18 points. Mitchell Gergasky and Patrick Rowley played well on defense. For The Team, Tommy Gleason led scored 19 points. Joe Davis was the assist leader, and Greg Horne and Jack Kearney played good defense.
Nighthawks 53, Huskies 48: For the Nighthawks, Mike Scharfenberg was high scorer with 24 points. Brock Chimileski had 14 and Nick Norberg had 8, Matt Wood added 6 and Miles LoBuglio played well. For the Huskies, Pat Mullins led the scoring with 18 points and Dean Demers added 13 points. Grant Ricketts scored 7 points and had 6 steals to lead the defense.
Running Rebels 29, Tar Heels 17: For the Running Rebels, Christian Mather was the high scorer with 9 points and Drew Sullivan added 6 points. Jacob Moore had 3 assists, Kyle Buckley had 6 steals and Michael Senf had 6 rebounds. For the Tar Heels, Ben Dayne was high scorer with 6 points. Brenton Scott had 4 assists, Chase Hutchinson had 3 steals and Steve Rahr had 5 rebounds.
