PRESIDENTIAL PORCELAIN SUBJECT OF LECTURE FEB. 11 IN GREENWICH

avv/gs set 1/9 #725120

GREENWICH, CONN. — The Greenwich Antiques Society and the Connecticut Ceramics Circle will present a lecture, “Dinner at the White House: Porcelain for American Presidents,” on Monday, February 11, at 1:15 pm, at The Bruce Museum. It will be given by Susan Gray Detweiler, scholar, author, curator and former president of the American Ceramics Society.

Dinner services for official use in the White House reveal the evolution of American taste and culture and evoke memories of distinguished gatherings of diplomats, celebrities and royalty at the national “First Table.” A survey of porcelains for official entertaining during the past 219 years is in the American Presidential China Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Detweiler writes and lectures about the history of ceramics in America. In 2007, her book American Presidential China, the Robert L. McNeil, Jr, Collection At the Philadelphia Museum of Art was published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Yale University Press.

Detweiler is a past president of the American Ceramics Circle and currently is committee chair for its research grants. Since 1985, she has been curator for The McNeil Americana Collection in Philadelphia.

For reservations, call 203-869-9531 or 914-631-9439; nonmembers $15.
