ROBERT MOWRY TO ADDRESS CHINA STUDENTSâ CLUB ON MING PORCELAINS AND MING CULTURE
ak/gs set 1/9 #724966
BOSTON, MASS. â Robert D. Mowry, Alan J. Dworsky curator of Chinese art at the Harvard University Art Museums, will deliver an illustrated lecture, âA Change in Taste: Ming Porcelains and Ming Culture,â Thursday, January 24, at 1 pm. The meeting will be held at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, and refreshments will precede the meeting beginning at 12:30 pm.
Mowryâs lecture will survey the development of Chinese porcelains produced during the Ming dynasty (1368â1644), from the regal blue and white pieces that characterize the late Fourteenth and early Fifteenth Centuries to the colorful enameled wares that typify the Sixteenth and early Seventeenth Centuries.
He will explore similarities between Ming porcelains and contemporaneous bronzes and lacquers, and contrast those ceramics with the monochrome-glazed wares of the proceeding Song dynasty (960â1279) and with the brilliantly hued pieces of the succeeding Qing dynasty (1644â1911). In addition, the lecture will introduce something of the historical and cultural contests that gave rise to those porcelains.
The China Studentsâ Club welcomes guests and potential new members. The lectures are free for members; $3 for nonmembers and guests. For information about the China Studentsâ Club, upcoming lectures and events, and directions to The College Club, www.chinastudentsclub.org or 413-775-7206.
