RODRIGO MOYNIHAN, JACOB EPSTEIN TO OPEN AT ROBERT MILLER JAN. 24

avv/gs set 1/9 #725148

NEW YORK CITY — On view January 24–February 6, Robert Miller Gallery will exhibit Rodrigo Moynihan’s still life paintings from the 1970s and 80s and Jacob Epstein’s bronze sculpture from the early Twentieth Century. This marks the fifth time Moynihan’s work has been shown in the gallery and it will be the first time for Epstein’s work. An opening reception will be Thursday, January 24, from 6 to 8 pm.

Moynihan (1910–1990) created realistic paintings on canvas that capture chance arrangements of objects and human figures in his studio. Abjuring non-objective forms, he and others members of what came to be known as the Euston Road School made works solidly grounded in reality.

His work makes historical nods to the still life tradition, yet he insisted that his pieces were not consciously arranged but rather the result of happenstance. Moynihan’s style shifts subtly from trompe l’oeil to impressionistic, often in the same piece.

Epstein (1880–1959) was born in New York and moved to Britain in his 20s, where he completed most of his work. The pieces in this exhibition were made by meticulously layering pellets of clay before casting, building up a surface that Epstein said “breaks up the light, and accentuates the characteristics,” giving “both character and likeness to the face.”

Epstein worked in series, sculpting figures of friends and family and building relationships with his models, many of whom felt privileged to be chosen by him. Among the most well-known are the model for “Senegalse Girl,” Madeleine Bechet, and Sunita, a young woman who went to London after running away from her husband in India.

The gallery is at 524 West 26th Street. For information, www.robertmillergallery.com or 212-366-4774
