MICHAEL SALTER AT JEFF BAILEY

ak/gs set 1/9 #724966

NEW YORK CITY — Every American city and town has a street lined with strip malls, fast food restaurants and discount stores. These engines of mass consumption present the public with a cacophony of visual imagery: signs, logos, advertisements and products competing for attention. In “Are You Sure” Michael Salter examines this visual chaos by mixing up, sorting out and resampling bits and pieces of contemporary visual culture in his first solo show in New York City, at the Jeff Bailey Gallery through February 9.

A 14-foot-tall sculpture dominates the exhibition. Constructed of Styrofoam packaging, each functional piece seems to have replicated endlessly, changing from a protector of packaged contents into a robot that might crush everything in its path.

The exhibition also includes a kinetic sculpture, drawings and an animated video. With a dark sense of humor and looping illogical analysis, Salter seeks to categorize various aspects of contemporary visual culture, searching for clarity and meaning.

Salter’s work has been exhibited at The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Ambrosino Gallery, Miami, Fla.; Lump Gallery/Projects, Raleigh, N.C.; and Gallery, Brussels, Belgium.

The Jeff Bailey Gallery is at 511 West 25th Street.
