The Health Of Fish In Long Island Sound

DERBY — The Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society, Inc in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Kellogg Environmental Center, will host a program, “The Health of Commercially Important Fish of the Long Island Sound,” on Tuesday, January 20, at 7:30 pm.

The program will be at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue. A donation of $4 is requested.

What’s happening to Long Island Sound’s lobsters? Are those oysters safe to eat? These and other related topics will be covered by Jose Pereira in his presentation during the Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society meeting. The effects of eutrophication, disease outbreaks in lobsters and invasive species will be examined. Plans to improve conditions will also be discussed.

Mr Pereira, a research fisheries biologist with the National Marine Fisheries in Milford, will look at the abundance of selected commercially or recreationally important fish and shellfish in Long Island Sound, as indicator of the health of the Sound. A lifelong Naugatuck resident, Mr Pereira has a bachelor of science and a master of science in biology and is currently pursuing a doctorate in ecology at UConn. For more information on his work and other studies the fisheries service is working on, visit http://mi.nefsc.noaa.gov/.

For further information, directions or to register phone Kellogg Environmental Center at 734-2513 or contact Peter Hornak at 203-729-6777.
