Services for Newtown seniors are sponsored by the Commission on Aging and are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

For information on federal, state and community resources available to seniors, call 270-4330 or 270-4315.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 10 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door mini-bus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the senior center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to the new Wal*Mart store on Route 6). Cost is 60¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

News For Week of         January 12-16

*An important update for Newtown and area seniors: ELDERLY HEALTH SCREENING SERVICES, also known as 60-PLUS WELLNESS SCREENING, has closed. All medical files will be shredded after January 16.

If you have used EHS services you have the right to obtain your files before that date at 161 North Main Street in Waterbury. Stop in or call 203-753-9284 or 203-312-5665 for more information.

*Newtown seniors are invited to participate in a day TRIP TO MOHEGAN SUN CASINO on Wednesday, January 14. Departure is 8 am. Cost is $22 per person which includes the coach bus transportation, $10 in food credits, two $5 plays on the big wheel or one $10 play on the big week. Not a bad deal!

*In February join us for LUNCH AND PERFORMANCE AT WESTCHESTER DINNER THEATER. On Wednesday, February 18, join us for a performance of Footloose, based on the popular Kevin Bacon movie. Cost is $63 per person, and departure from the senior center is $63. Seating is limited so call soon to sign up if you are interested.

*Also in February AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE will be returning. From February 2 to April 2, each Monday between 9 am and noon, Newtown seniors can take advantage of free tax help. There is no charge, but appointments are necessary. Call the senior center to set up an appointment as soon as you decide you’d like some help.

*TRIP BOOKLETS for 2004 will be available at the senior center by the first week of February. Call or stop by for details.

*THE GOLD COAST SINGERS will be here on Wednesday, January 21, at 1 pm. Please join us for this free performance.

*The senior center will be CLOSED on Monday, January 19, in observance of DR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR DAY.

This Week’s Programs

*Ann McGrath will be at the senior center on Tuesday, January 13, at 1 pm, to lead a workshop where participants will PAINT AND DECORATE A WOODEN SNOWMAN. Call the senior center to sing up for the class; space is limited.

*The next round of BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS will be held on Thursday, January 15, beginning at noon. Call for information.

*Also on Thursday, at 1 pm, Bill Michaels will return to the senior center to warm our hearts with his singing. Come out of the cold for a little while and enjoy an hour of ENTERTAINMENT BY BILL MICHAELS.

REMINDERS: Has it been a while since you’ve played Bridge? Would you like to learn how? Stop by the senior center any Monday at 10 am for MARY MATERN’S BRIDGE GROUP.

*Grab your walking shoes and catch up with Marilyn Place for WEEKLY WALKS AT FAIRFIELD HILLS each Monday at 10 am. She starts each week from Newtown House.

*CHAIR EXERCISE: Debbie’s chair exercise class is offered twice each week. Join us Monday afternoons at 1 pm and/or Wednesday mornings at 10.

This is a low-level chair exercise class. We target the seniors who haven’t exercised in a while and those who would like additional upper body stretching.

*Our SEWING CLASS is working on chemo caps, totes for cancer patients, and trach bibs. If you are interested join us on Mondays at 1 pm.

*HATHA YOGA CLASSES are Monday and Thursday mornings at 10. Bring a mat or towel to lie on and wear loose clothing (no belts; sweats are perfect).

*ART CLASSES are Monday afternoons at 1.

*Join Debbie Kenyon on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10 am for EXERCISE CLASSES that are vigorous yet gentle, with lots of stretches. The class incorporates resistance band work with some low-impact cardio and lots of stretches. Participants are encouraged to go at their own rate and finish feeling refreshed, invigorated and with more energy.

* AFTERNOON CRAFTS are offered Tuesdays at 1:30.

*Join us at BROOKFIELD LANES each Tuesday and Thursday for a great time bowling. We meet at noon and the cost is only $1.25 per game.

* CHORUS GROUP is at the senior center each Thursday afternoon at 1 pm. Pianists are also invited.

*MAH JONGG players have two opportunities on Fridays. The advanced group plays at 9 am, and a beginner’s group plays at 1.

*QUILTING CLASS meets on Fridays at 10 am.

*Massage therapist ANITA MOTT has begun visiting on the first Monday of each month to offer massage for a fee, by appointment only. Her next visit will be on February 2, and she will be here between 10 am and noon. Call for details on the cost of a massage and to make an appointment.

*NEW HORIZONS, a support group for widows and widowers, meets on the first Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be on February 3 at 3 pm.

*Thinking about doing some TRAVELING this year? Trips are being scheduled to Beijing in February, Philadelphia in March, Nantucket and Pennsylvania in April (separate trips), Santa Fe in May, and a special “America’s Rockies By Rail” package in August. Stop by the senior center for more details.

Monday: Roast turkey with gravy, herb stuffing, cranberry juice, mashed squash, pumpernickel bread, pumpkin pie with topping;

Tuesday: Roast pork with gravy, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, rye bread, applesauce garnish, fresh fruit;

Wednesday: Minestrone soup, unsalted crackers, turkey a la king, biscuit, broccoli florettes, brownie;

Thursday: Spaghetti with sauce and meatballs, fresh zucchini, Parmesan cheese, garlic bread, tapioca pudding with topping;

Friday: Fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, biscuit, sweet potato pie with topping.

Activities Schedule,         January 12-16

Monday: AM Bridge, hatha yoga class, walking group (at Newtown House, Fairfield Hills); PM chair exercise class, art class;

Tuesday: AM Pinochle, exercise; PM bowling (at Brookfield Lanes), wooden snowman craft workshop;

Wednesday: AM Pinochle, chair exercise, line dancing; PM Bingo;

Thursday: AM Pinochle, exercise, hatha yoga class; PM bowling (at Brookfield Lanes), chorus/sing-along group, music by Bill Michaels;

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting; PM beginner’s mah jongg, knitting.
