Autism Related Coursework At UConn

The Northwest Connecticut Partnership for Autism Spectrum Disorders and Related Disabilities has announced that courses will be offered in the spring 2004 semester at both UCONN’s Torrington campus and Northwestern Connecticut Community College. These courses will provide educational opportunities for service providers and a knowledge base of special skills relative to autism.

Human Development and Family Studies 230 will explore current knowledge about autism with a focus on developing partnerships with families and evidence-based educational programming for children with autism. It will be taught by Mary Beth Bruder, PhD, on alternate Saturdays from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm beginning January 31.

Psychology 249, Emotional/Behavioral Disorders of Childhood will cover the theory, research, treatment, and prevention in developmental psychopathology from infancy through adolescence. It will be taught by Celine Saulnier, PhD, Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 pm beginning January 22.

To register for either course, contact UConn Torrington at 860-626-6801.

Psychology 218, Children with Special Needs will cover special children — who they are, how they behave, and what can be done to help them. Emphasis is on the child in the home and in social environments, including school-related problems. It will be offered Mondays from 6:30 to 9:30 pm beginning January 26.

Psychology 258 Behavior Modification will investigate the events that influence and control personal actions. Students will learn how to assess and develop environments to facilitate and maintain behavior changes. It will be taught by Robert J. Beck, PhD, Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 pm beginning January 22.

To register for either of these courses, call Northwestern Connecticut Community College at 860-738-6314.
