January 8 Weather Cancellations
On the heels of an announcement from Newtown Public Schools that all afternoon and evening events of Monday, January 8, are being canceled ahead of snowy precipitation this evening, Newtown Parks & Rec has followed suit.the January 4 nor'easter thatÃÂ all but paralyzed the state for nearly 24 hours last week. It could, however, create difficult travel on roads that are not treated.The Newtown Bee will continue adding to this list as new announcements are received. All Parks & Rec evening classes at the schools, as well as The Garage/teen center, have been canceled for today.
This does not include programs scheduled at NYA Sports & Fitness Center, according to an e-mail blast from Parks & Rec issued Monday afternoon.
The Elementary Dance Program that was to start on Monday has been postponed to Wednesday, the announcement continued.
Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, Middlesex, and New London Counties are all covered by a National Weather Service Special Weather Statement, which is calling for "a light wintry mix for this afternoon and early this evening.
"A wintry mix of mainly snow and sleet will move across the region from west to east late this afternoon and impact the evening commute. Any snow and ice accumulation will be very minimal, but ground temperatures remain quite cold from the recent Arctic outbreak.
"This will result in difficult travel conditions with respect to any precipitation that falls. It will only take just a little bit of freezing rain to cause treacherous travel conditions. Therefore, stay tuned to NOAA All Hazards radio, and local media outlets for updates in case a Winter Weather Advisory is issued," the statement continued.
