The Friends of the C.H. Booth Library is holding its first-ever children’s and young adult pop-up book sale at the C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street. The sale began on January 4 and runs until January 30.

The sale is located on the second floor of the library near the main circulation desk during library hours.

This sale features a wide variety of affordable, good quality books, DVDs, and activity-related items for children of all ages, particularly jigsaw puzzles and games. Books on parenting and child development are also available.

Friends Book Sale Chairperson Denise Kaiser said, “We are offering a broad selection of children’s fiction and nonfiction books, picture and pop-up books to engage the youngest children, and easy-to-read books for new readers, from Dr Seuss to Magic Treehouse, Geronimo Stilton, and many other popular series.”

More accomplished readers will find series like Alex Rider, Bone, Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, sports books, and graphic novels.

Kathryn Hanson, who manages young adult books for the Friends, said, “We also have the complete Hunger Games and series like Thirst and Rot and Ruin and anything by Cassandra Clare.”

For ease of selection, the books are organized by reading level. Stock will be replenished frequently over the course of the sale.

Library Director Douglas Lord noted, “This will provide Newtown families and library patrons with an easy way to keep their young family members in reading material throughout the winter. We are very grateful to the Friends for sponsoring this event because proceeds from the sale will be used to help the library.”

The Friends of C.H. Booth Library’s Little Book Store remains open, also on the second floor of the library near the main circulation desk, just in another corner of the library.

Marge Gingolaski, manager of the Little Book Store, encourages library patrons to “make sure to visit the Little Book Store while you’re there. It’s a hidden gem of a book store on the second floor of the library. All year round the Little Book Store sells high quality, affordable books for all ages and interests.”

The Friends and the library ask that visitors follow current public health guidelines to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and use the hand sanitizer available while shopping. Sanitizing stations are available throughout the building to keep the library and library grounds a safe place for the community.

By January 5, Friends of C.H. Booth Library President Toni Earnshaw said people were already stopping by for the sale.

“This is a win, win, win for everybody,” Kaiser said on January 5, while standing near the freshly displayed sale. “...We want kids to read and kids want to read.”

Kaiser said the sale is supported by the library in its offer to use the space, by the school district in an announcement sent to district parents via e-mail, and by the library’s children’s department thanks to Children’s Librarian Lana Bennison also spreading the news about the sale.

Earnshaw shared that the sale makes the books, games, puzzles, and more affordable for local families. Hanson pointed out that games like chess and backgammon, extra popular thanks to Netflix’s show The Queen’s Gambit, are available while supplies last.

For an added measure of safety, the Friends offers two contactless payment options: You can either leave cash or a check in the secure cash boxes available or go to www.boothbooksale.org to pay by credit or debit card, or using your PayPal account. Check the library website at chboothlibrary.org or call 203-426-4533 to confirm library hours.
