South Main Deli Hosting Send-Off
For Army-Bound Dylan Borst
Friends and family of Dylan Borst, 17, have organized a reception and send-off party scheduled for Sunday, January 9, from 2 to 3 pm, at South Main Deli, 150 South Main Street. The public is encouraged to attend.
Dylan Lloyd Borst has lived in Newtown since 1987 along with his twin sister Wendy and his parents Jim and Laurie Borst. He attended Newtown schools beginning with the Childrenâs Adventure Center. He is now in his senior year at Newtown High School and is scheduled to graduate in January, having enrolled four years ago in an accelerated program for early graduation.
In keeping with his longstanding goal to join the Army, Dylan has enjoyed extra-curricular activities, team sports and board games that invoke the need to strategize. He participated in Pop Warner and Newtown Nighthawks football and as a youth he enjoyed such games as Battleship, Stratego and Risk, and also engaged in combat war games such as paintball.
Frequently on the honor roll, Dylan was inducted into the Latin Honor Society and took part in the Congressional Student Leadership Conference/Junior War College held at Washington & Lee College and Virginia Military Institute (VMI). This allowed him to advance his aspiration to join the Army, which had been a dream since attending Newtown Middle School.
While attending high school, Dylan worked at the job bank, Fairfield Auction, and most recently at South Main Deli. He also attended Delayed Entry Program (DEP) functions where he learned first aid, the Armyâs phonetic alphabet, map reading, and drill and ceremony formations.
Through the help of Army recruiter Sergeant Hixon, Dylan made several overnight visits to Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Chicopee, Mass., where he took the three-hour Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test scoring a 93 out of a possible 99.
Dylan will return to MEPS on February 9 where he will begin formal processing for his three-year enlistment. On February 10, he will travel to Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., to begin nine weeks of basic training. After this, Dylan will go to Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla., for artillery training.
He has chosen to learn how to operate the Armyâs Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). Hoping to be stationed in Europe, Dylan plans on making the Army a career that could eventually lead to a future in the Central Intelligence Agency.
