Firefighters Respond To CO Call At Ashlar
Botsford firefighters and the fire marshal responded to Ashlar of Newtown, a nursing home at 139 Toddy Hill Road, on the afternoon of January 3, in response to a report of a possible carbon monoxide problem there.
Botsford firefighters were dispatched at 2:45 pm. The fire marshal was sent there at 3:08 pm. Ambulance volunteers also responded.
Four elderly female patients at the nursing home ranging in age from 85 to 91 were checked for possible carbon monoxide exposure, according to fire reports.
Botsford Fire Chief Wayne Ciaccia said on January 4 that the four patients had reported feeling ill, one or two of whom reportedly were transported to the hospital to be checked, with the others reportedly being checked at the scene by ambulance staffers.
Apparently a flue pipe in the building had developed a crack, resulting in a possible carbon monoxide exposure situation, the fire chief said.
Ashlar maintenance personnel and the town building inspector also investigated the problems, Chief Ciaccia said.
CO readings taken at the scene indicated relatively low CO levels, Chief Ciaccia said.
