Michael Frayn’s Noises Off will serve as the 2025 season opener for Town Players of Newtown.

Directed by Alexis M. Vournazos, the play takes a fond look at the follies of theater folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a touring theater troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening performance, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run.

Frayn gives audiences a window into the inner workings of theater behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance.

Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises Off is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and — of course — flying sardines.

The production is planned at The Little Theatre for weekends, March 28-April 12.

Auditions have been announced for Monday and Tuesday, January 13-14, 7-9 pm each night, at the theater, 18 Orchard Hill Road.

Callbacks would be conducted Thursday, January 16, also 7-9 pm.

Sides will be provided and/or a cold read from the script may also take place.

The show consists of five men and four women. English accents are required for the play-within-the-play Nothing On and American accents otherwise. Character breakdowns are available at newtownplayers.org/noises-off.

Those planning to audition should note Noises Off is a physical show and requires actors with good mobility. Because of the nature of the play, every cast member will be called to every rehearsal.

Rehearsals will be held Tuesday through Thursday evenings, 7-10 pm, beginning the week of January 27.

Weekend rehearsals, on Saturday and Sunday, will be added closer to opening. Those auditioning are asked to have a list of conflicts between January 27 until opening night when they arrive for auditions.
