âPatterson Legacyâ
At Minor Memorial Library
ROXBURY â âThe Patterson Legacy: Three Generations of Artists,â an exhibit of paintings by Howard Ashman Patterson, his son Robert Burns Patterson and his grandsons David Burns Patterson and Michael Remington Patterson, will begin with a reception at Minor Memorial library on Saturday, January 12, from 2 to 4 pm, and continue during regular library hours through Monday, February 18.
The library, at 23 South Street, is open Mondays from noon to 7 pm, Wednesdays from 10 am to 7 pm, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
Michael Patterson is a favorite among his Roxbury neighbors and has shown his work at Minor Memorial several times in recent years. An honors graduate of SUNY Purchase, he frequently returns to his beloved themes â rainy city streets, dappled sunlight, people at the beach â whether he is painting or creating sculptures of clay and stone. His work is held in more than 500 private and corporate collections.
Howard Ashman Patterson spent much of his art career in France. Many of his paintings reflect an integration of Impressionist and Modernist ideas. He had many solo exhibitions, including a show at the Allard Galleries in Paris that led to a 1932 review in the Paris newspaper Le Figaro that cited his âexceptional qualities as a colorist.â
After studying under his father at the Academy of Art in Newark, N.J., and later at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. Robert Burns Patterson pursued a successful career in the art departments of several large advertising agencies.
David Burns Patterson cites many influences on his art: his grandfather âPat,â the French painters Cezanne and Corot and, especially, George Innes, the American landscape painter of the late 19th Century. Saying that âevery canvas presents a different problem to solve,â Mr Patterson moves between abstract and representational art, always basing his work on the forms, color and texture of nature.
The opening reception is free and open to the public. The library is handicapped accessible and refreshments will be served. Call the library at 860-350-2181 for information and directions.
